Audi 2.9 TFSI: years, specs & known problems
By CarWhere Research · Updated
Audi's 2.9 TFSI is a 2,894 cc twin-turbocharged V6 with both turbos inside the vee. It makes 444 hp in the 2018–2025 RS 5 and the 2020–2025 S6 and S7, where it gets a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and 429 hp and 442 lb-ft as the standard engine in the 2027 Q7.
The 2.9 TFSI shares the 84.5 mm bore of the 3.0 TFSI but uses a shorter 86.0 mm stroke for 2,894 cc, a 10.0:1 compression ratio and two turbochargers inside the vee. Audi describes a B-cycle combustion process with centrally mounted direct injectors, a method with a shorter compression phase and a longer expansion phase. It debuted in the 2018 RS 5 Coupe at 444 hp and 443 lb-ft with an eight-speed Tiptronic.
The 2020 S6 and S7 adopted the same 444 hp output with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and later Audi documents list 442 lb-ft. For 2027 the redesigned Q7 makes a 429 hp version of the 2.9 its standard engine. Check any used car for open recalls by VIN.
