Fuel injector failure (cracked bodies, ball-seat erosion) (2001–2004)
Major repairLB7 injectors can crack or wear their internal ball seats, which raises fuel return flow and can push diesel into the crankcase. GM's special coverage adjustment 04039B (revised November 2007 to add 2004 trucks and 2003–2004 Kodiak/TopKick) paid for replacement for 7 years or 200,000 miles from the in-service date. That coverage has expired, and owners report that injectors replaced under the policy can fail again later.[3][4][1]
Symptoms
- White or gray smoke at idle or startup
- Rough idle or misfire
- Rising engine-oil level that smells of fuel
- Hard starting
Check before buying
- Ask for injector replacement records and dates
- Check the oil level and smell the dipstick for fuel
- Have a shop run a fuel-return or injector balance-rate test
