LT1: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The modern LT1 is GM's 6.2-liter Gen V small-block V8 with direct injection and Active Fuel Management. It powered the 2014–2019 Corvette Stingray and Grand Sport at 455 hp and 460 lb-ft, or 460 hp with the performance exhaust, and the 2016–2024 Camaro SS at 455 hp and 455 lb-ft.

GM introduced the Gen V LT1 for the 2014 C7 Corvette Stingray. It keeps the LS3's 103.25 mm bore and 92 mm stroke but adds direct injection, continuously variable valve timing, Active Fuel Management and an 11.5:1 compression ratio, all in an aluminum block with aluminum heads. The name reuses the 1992–1997 Gen II LT1, a 5.7-liter engine from the Corvette, Camaro and Firebird that shares no parts with it.

The LT1 stayed in the Corvette through the 2019 Stingray and Grand Sport and went into the sixth-generation Camaro SS from 2016 until the Camaro ended after the 2024 model year. It has no engine-specific NHTSA safety recall. The concern most often raised on used examples is AFM lifter failure, which is the subject of a pending class action rather than a GM program.

LT1 problems and what to check

AFM lifter failure (alleged in class action) (2014–2019 Corvette; 2016+ Camaro named in suit)

Moderate

Harrison v. General Motors, a proposed class action in the Eastern District of Michigan, alleges that AFM and DFM valve lifters in GM 5.3L, 6.0L and 6.2L V8s fail early. The vehicle list includes 2014–2019 Corvette and 2016-and-later Camaro models. Class certification had not been granted as of December 2025 and there is no finding of a defect.[5]

Symptoms

  • Ticking from the valvetrain
  • Misfire codes or a flashing check-engine light
  • Rough running or hesitation

Check before buying

  • Listen for tick at idle and light cruise
  • Scan for stored misfire codes
  • Ask for any lifter, camshaft or valve lifter oil manifold repair records

Frequently asked questions

How much horsepower does the LT1 have?

In the 2014–2019 Corvette it is rated at 455 hp and 460 lb-ft, or 460 hp and 465 lb-ft with the performance exhaust. The 2016–2024 Camaro SS version is rated at 455 hp and 455 lb-ft.

Is the new LT1 the same as the 1990s LT1?

No. The 1992–1997 LT1 was a 5.7-liter Gen II small-block, while the 2014-and-later LT1 is a 6.2-liter Gen V engine with direct injection.

Does the LT1 have direct injection?

Yes. The Gen V LT1 uses direct injection with an 11.5:1 compression ratio, plus variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management.

What cars have the LT1?

The 2014–2019 Corvette Stingray, the 2017–2019 Corvette Grand Sport and the 2016–2024 Camaro SS; GM also sells it as a crate engine.

Has the LT1 been recalled?

There is no NHTSA safety recall for the LT1 engine itself. AFM lifter failures are the subject of a pending lawsuit, not a recall.
