LT4: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The LT4 is GM's supercharged 6.2-liter Gen V V8. It is rated at 650 hp and 650 lb-ft in the 2015–2019 Corvette Z06 and 2017–2024 Camaro ZL1, 640 hp and 630 lb-ft in the 2016–2019 Cadillac CTS-V, and 668 hp and 659 lb-ft in the CT5-V Blackwing from 2022.

The LT4 is the supercharged member of the Gen V small-block family, launched in the 2015 C7 Corvette Z06. It shares the LT1's 6.2-liter bore and stroke and direct injection, but adds a compact 1.7-liter Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger making up to 9.4 psi, a 10.0:1 compression ratio, solid titanium intake valves, forged aluminum pistons, a forged steel crankshaft and a higher-pressure fuel pump. The Z06 version uses a dry-sump oiling system.

GM then installed the LT4 in the 2016–2019 Cadillac CTS-V, the 2017–2024 Camaro ZL1 and the 2022-and-later CT5-V Blackwing, which carries the highest rating of the group. There is no engine-specific NHTSA recall. Documented items are heat soak on early Z06 cars in hot track sessions, which GM addressed with cooling changes for 2017, and AFM lifter claims in a pending class action.

LT4 problems and what to check

Heat soak and power reduction on track (early Z06) (2015–2016 Corvette Z06)

Moderate

Owners of early C7 Z06 cars reported the engine pulling power or entering a protection mode during extended track sessions in hot weather. Chevrolet's chief engineer said a small share of owners were affected, and the 2017 Z06 received a revised hood, larger supercharger cover and other cooling updates.[4][5]

Symptoms

  • Reduced power after several hot laps
  • High coolant, oil or intake-air temperature warnings
  • Limp-home mode on track

Check before buying

  • Ask how and where the car was tracked
  • Check for aftermarket cooling or supercharger lid upgrades on 2015–2016 cars
  • Review service records for overheating-related repairs

AFM lifter failure (alleged in class action) (2016–2019 CTS-V and 2014–2019 Corvette named in suit)

Moderate

The pending Harrison v. General Motors class action alleges early failure of AFM and DFM lifters in GM 6.2L V8s and lists the 2016–2019 Cadillac CTS-V and 2014–2019 Corvette among the vehicles. Class certification had not been granted as of December 2025.[6]

Symptoms

  • Valvetrain tick
  • Misfire codes
  • Rough idle or hesitation

Check before buying

  • Scan for stored misfire codes
  • Listen for tick at idle
  • Ask for valvetrain repair records
