Chevrolet SS sedan history, 2014 to 2017
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The Chevy SS was a rear-drive V8 sports sedan sold for the 2014–2017 model years. Built by Holden in Elizabeth, South Australia, on the VF Commodore, it used a 415 hp, 415 lb-ft 6.2L LS3 V8. A six-speed manual and Magnetic Ride Control arrived for 2015, and production ended when Holden stopped building cars in Australia.
Chevy SS history
The Chevrolet SS gave American buyers a version of Australia's Holden Commodore: a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan with a Corvette-derived V8. It was built at Holden's Elizabeth plant near Adelaide, South Australia, on the VF Commodore architecture, and was priced at $44,470 including destination when it launched for 2014.
Its 6.2L LS3 V8 was rated at 415 hp and 415 lb-ft. The first cars came only with a six-speed automatic; for 2015 Chevrolet added a six-speed manual option and made Magnetic Ride Control standard, and the 2016 facelift added a dual-mode exhaust with quad tips.
The SS was always a low-volume car. Chevrolet's U.S. sales were 2,479 in 2014, 2,895 in 2015, 3,013 in 2016 and 4,055 in 2017. After GM announced the end of Holden's Australian manufacturing, 2017 became the SS's final model year.[1],[2]

What to check before you buy one
- Confirm whether the car has the manual or automatic transmission — manual cars are rarer and priced higher.
- Check whether a 2014 car has the standard suspension; Magnetic Ride Control became standard only for 2015.
- Ask for service records and look for signs of track use or aftermarket tunes.
- Because the SS was built in Australia, ask how body and trim parts have been sourced if the car has had repairs.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and confirm open campaigns are complete.

How to verify a Chevy SS's factory options
With so few built, details such as the transmission, sunroof and model year changes matter. CarWhere's GM build sheet lists the ordered-option RPO codes on record for an SS's VIN when that data exists; it is not the complete Service Parts Identification list.
Chevrolet build sheet by VIN
CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, decodes the ordered RPO option codes — trim, paint, interior, engine, axle and packages — into plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year.
