GMC HUMMER EV history: the electric pickup and SUV
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The GMC HUMMER EV is an all-electric pickup and SUV revealed on October 20, 2020, and built at GM's Factory Zero in Detroit since November 2021. The launch Edition 1 pickup is rated by GMC at 1,000 hp from three motors, with CrabWalk four-wheel steering and Extract Mode. U.S. sales reached 15,788 in 2025.
GMC HUMMER EV history
GM bought the Hummer name in 1999 and sold Hummer-branded H2 and H3 SUVs before discontinuing the brand in 2010 after its bankruptcy. The name returned in October 2020 as a model rather than a brand: the GMC HUMMER EV, an electric supertruck on GM's Ultium battery platform.
GMC revealed the pickup on October 20, 2020, with the Edition 1 priced at $112,595 and estimated at 1,000 hp from three electric motors and a 0–60 mph time of about three seconds; it sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening. An SUV version followed in April 2021. Truck production began at Factory Zero (Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly) on November 17, 2021, and SUV production on January 30, 2023.
Signature features include CrabWalk, which uses four-wheel steering to move the vehicle diagonally, and Extract Mode, which raises the air suspension about six inches. The Edition 1 pickup weighs 9,640 lb and carries a 24-module Ultium pack with 212.7 kWh of usable capacity.[1],[2],[3]

What to check before you buy one
- Confirm the version and motor count: three-motor (Edition 1, EV3X) and two-motor (EV2X, EV2) trucks differ in power and range.
- Ask for the battery state of health and a recent charging history, and check that DC fast charging works at full speed.
- Confirm which software features are enabled — CrabWalk, Extract Mode, Super Cruise — and whether any require an active plan.
- Inspect the underbody armor, wheels and tires for off-road damage; tires on a 9,000-plus-pound truck wear quickly and are expensive.
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup (nhtsa.gov/recalls) and ask a GMC EV-certified dealer to confirm software updates are complete.

How to verify a GMC HUMMER EV's factory options
HUMMER EV versions look similar, so the build record is the cleanest way to confirm how a VIN was ordered — version, motor count, wheel and tire package, and options such as the Extreme Off-Road Package — when licensed build data exists. It lists ordered-option RPO codes rather than a complete equipment list.
GMC build sheet by VIN
CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, decodes the ordered RPO option codes — trim, paint, interior, engine, axle and packages — into plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year.
