Porsche VIN Decoder Guide: Every Position, US & European VINs
Every Porsche VIN starts WP0 (sports cars, sedans) or WP1 (SUVs) — but what follows depends on where the car was first sold. US-market VINs carry a full descriptor and check digit and decode completely; European-market VINs put ZZZ in positions 4-6 and break US decoders — including the year, which repeats every 30 years. This guide covers both formats with federally-verified examples, both free decoders, and an honest answer on what a VIN can and cannot tell you about a car's options.

ZZZ VINs don't decode on NHTSA-based tools. This decoder resolves the model, generation, and the correct year from licensed European production data.
A Porsche VIN, position by position
| Positions | US-market VIN | European-market VIN |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | World Manufacturer Identifier: WP0 = Porsche AG sports cars/sedans, WP1 = Porsche SUVs. Identical worldwide. | |
| 4–6 | Descriptor: body style, restraint system, and part of the model code (e.g. AA2, AB2, AG2). | ZZZ filler — EU type approval requires no descriptor. This is why US decoders return nothing useful. |
| 7–8 | Model line, as part of the descriptor: …A9 on modern 911s, …A8 on 718s, …Y1 on Taycans; classic VINs carry 99 directly. The federal decode resolves the exact generation as the Series (Type 992, 982, Y1A, 9YA). | Model line, directly: 99 = 911, Y1 = Taycan. Generation resolves from production records. |
| 9 | Check digit — a mistyped US VIN fails validation. | Filler (often Z) — no check digit exists, so typos look valid. Verify against the registration document. |
| 10 | Model year — and the famous trap: the code repeats every 30 years (D = 1983 and 2013, N = 1992 and 2022). US VINs resolve it via the descriptor; European VINs only resolve against the model's production window — a 991-generation 911 cannot be a 1983 car. | |
| 11 | Assembly plant (verified): S = Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen (911, 718, Taycan) · L = Leipzig (Panamera, Macan) · D = Bratislava, Slovakia (current Cayenne). Historically Boxsters were also built by Valmet in Uusikaupunki, Finland (1997–2011). | |
| 12–17 | Production serial number. | |

The VIN is the key to the build sheet — not the build sheet itself
A Porsche VIN encodes identity: model line, generation, year, plant, serial. It does not encode a single option — the $12,000 of PTS paint, carbon-ceramic brakes, or a lightweight package live in Porsche's build records, keyed by the VIN. For a US-market Porsche, the CarWhere build-sheet report retrieves that factory record: every option code and name, original MSRP, paint and interior. Buying, selling, or verifying a spec — that's the document that settles it.
European-market (WP0ZZZ) VINs: no US data source carries the build record — a Porsche dealer or Porsche Classic can retrieve it from the factory side.
FAQ
What do the first three characters of a Porsche VIN mean?
They are the World Manufacturer Identifier. WP0 is Porsche AG sports cars and sedans (911, 718, Taycan, Panamera); WP1 is Porsche SUVs (Cayenne, Macan). Porsche has never assembled a vehicle outside Europe, so every genuine Porsche VIN starts WP0 or WP1 — a Porsche VIN beginning with anything else deserves deep suspicion.
How do I tell a European Porsche VIN from a US one?
Look at positions 4-6. A US-market Porsche carries a descriptor there (letters and digits encoding body, restraints, and model line — e.g. WP0AA2A94PS…), plus a check digit in position 9. A European or rest-of-world Porsche fills positions 4-6 with ZZZ (WP0ZZZ99ZDS…) and carries no check digit — EU type approval requires neither. That difference is why US decoders fail on European Porsche VINs.
What is the Porsche year code, and why do decoders get it wrong?
Position 10 encodes the model year, but the code repeats every 30 years — D means both 1983 and 2013, N means both 1992 and 2022. US decoders resolve the ambiguity using the descriptor section; on a European ZZZ VIN there is no descriptor, so tools built on NHTSA data routinely report a 2013 car as a 1983 one. The year is only trustworthy when resolved against the model's production window (a 991-generation 911 cannot be a 1983 car).
What does the 11th character of a Porsche VIN mean?
The assembly plant. Verified against federal decode records: S = Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen (911, 718, Taycan), L = Leipzig (Panamera, Macan), D = Bratislava, Slovakia (current-generation Cayenne — a detail many guides still get wrong; earlier Cayennes were final-assembled in Leipzig). Historically, Boxsters were also built under contract by Valmet in Uusikaupunki, Finland (1997–2011).
Can I get the factory options or build sheet from a Porsche VIN?
Not from the VIN's characters — Porsche VINs encode identity (model line, year, plant, serial), not equipment. The factory build record (every option code, paint, interior, PTS color) exists in Porsche's systems keyed BY the VIN: any Porsche dealer can print it, Porsche Classic provides certificates for older cars, and for US-market VINs CarWhere's build-sheet report retrieves the factory data. For European-market (ZZZ) VINs, no US data source carries the build record.
What is a Porsche Type number (992, 991, 982, 9YA)?
Porsche's internal generation code — what enthusiasts call the chassis generation. The federal decode returns it as the Series: a 2023 911 decodes as Type 992, a 2022 718 Cayman as Type 982, a 2022 Taycan as Type Y1A, a 2023 Cayenne as Type 9YA, a 2018 Panamera as Type 971. On European VINs the model line appears directly in positions 7-8 (99 = 911, Y1 = Taycan).
Sources & method: US decodes verified against NHTSA vPIC in October 2026 (Series, plant city, and model-year fields quoted as returned); European ZZZ decodes via licensed European production data. Positions 4-8 encode per-manufacturer schemes — where this guide generalizes, it states the verified examples it generalizes from. Option/build data is not VIN-encoded and claims otherwise should be treated as model-level guesses.
