Mazda Protegé history: three US generations, 1990–2003
By CarWhere Research · Updated
The Mazda Protegé was the US name for the sedan version of Mazda's Familia (323) compact. EPA lists it from the 1990 model year, first as the 323 Protegé, through 2003, across three generations. The Protegé5 wagon joined for 2002, a turbocharged Mazdaspeed Protegé followed for 2003, and the Mazda3 took over for 2004.
Mazda Protegé history history
Mazda's Familia, sold in many export markets as the 323, gave the US its Protegé sedan. Mazda introduced the seventh-generation Familia sedan and hatchback in February 1989, and EPA lists the US sedan as the 323 Protegé for 1990–1991, with 1.6- and 1.8-liter fours, and as the Protegé from 1992.
The eighth-generation Familia of June 1994, which Mazda itself labels “Protege (US),” became the 1995–1998 Protegé; EPA lists 1.5-liter and 1.8-liter engines. The ninth generation, introduced in Japan in June 1998, became the 1999–2003 Protegé, gaining a 2.0-liter engine from 2001.
Mazda's five-door Familia S-Wagon was sold in the US as the Protegé5, listed by EPA for 2002–2003. A limited, turbocharged Mazdaspeed Protegé sedan followed for 2003. For 2004, EPA lists the Mazda3 and no Protegé.[1],[2],[3],[4],[5],[7]

Engine and drivetrain facts
- EPA lists only four-cylinder engines in every Protegé model year; the 1991 323 Protegé 4x4 is its all-wheel-drive listing.
- EPA lists 1.6-liter and 1.8-liter engines for 1990, with the 1.8-liter in both SOHC and DOHC form.
- For the 1995–1998 generation EPA lists a 1.5-liter four and 1.8-liter SOHC and DOHC fours; Mazda's own description of the Japanese car lists a 1.5-liter DOHC and a 1.8-liter DOHC.
- The 1999–2003 car started with 1.6- and 1.8-liter engines; EPA lists a 2.0-liter from 2001 and only the 2.0-liter for 2002–2003, with manual and automatic transmissions.

What to check before you buy one
- Match the model year to the generation table before comparing cars; a 1998 and a 1999 Protegé are different generations.
- Check the VIN for open recalls at NHTSA. Recall 15V-674 covers the ignition switch on 1990–1998 Protegés, and the remedy is a free switch replacement.
- On a car sold as a Mazdaspeed Protegé or Protegé MP3, confirm the model from the VIN and documents, since these were limited editions built on the standard sedan.
- When comparing fuel economy, use EPA's current listings, which re-rate older cars under its revised test method.
How to verify a Mazda Protegé history's factory options
A Mazda's model, engine and drivetrain are fixed at the factory. CarWhere decodes the 17-character VIN and, where licensed factory build data exists, lists the equipment the car was built with. It does not promise a complete option list for every VIN.
Mazda build sheet by VIN
CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the vehicle was built with — trim, drivetrain, paint, interior and option packages — in plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year and is strongest for recent vehicles.
