Why is it called the G-Wagon?
'G-Wagon' is the American nickname for the Geländewagen, German for off-road or cross-country vehicle. Mercedes' own English archive files every generation under '460 series cross-country vehicles', '461 series' and '463 series', and the US press materials still call the current model THE GELÄNDEWAGEN. Since 1993 the official name has been G-Class.
Development began in 1972 under a cooperation agreement between Daimler-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz, Austria, where the Puch plant was expanded for series production. Since August 1981 the vehicles have been built on a contract basis rather than by a joint company. Mercedes-Benz USA identifies the Graz factory as Magna Steyr, and says the G-Class is still built largely by hand there. The 600,000th G-Class, a G 580 with EQ Technology, left the Graz line in 2025.[7][11][12][13][14]
The electric G-Wagon: G 580 with EQ Technology
Mercedes revealed the G 580 with EQ Technology in April 2024 as the first fully electric G-Class. It keeps the ladder frame, independent front suspension and a solid (De Dion) rear axle, and uses four individually controlled motors, one near each wheel, for 579 hp and 859 lb-ft combined. Each motor has its own 2-speed transmission, so LOW RANGE is still selectable.
The battery is built into the ladder frame. Mercedes' launch release quoted 116 kWh usable; mbusa.com now lists 117 kWh. The EPA rates the 2027 model at 249 miles (239 miles for 2025 and 2026). Peak DC charging is 200 kW, and Mercedes quotes 29 minutes for a 10–80% charge.
The 2027 G 580 starts at $163,750 before destination on mbusa.com. The 2025 launch year added an EDITION ONE model starting at $179,750.
- G-TURN: on loose or unpaved ground, with LOW RANGE engaged and the Rock drive program selected, the wheels on each side turn in opposite directions so the vehicle can rotate on the spot, up to two full turns.
- G-STEERING: an off-road function that significantly reduces the turning circle.
- Intelligent off-road crawl: three settings that hold steady propulsion on difficult terrain.
- Virtual differential locks through torque vectoring in place of mechanical locks.
- 33.5 in maximum fording depth, 5.9 in more than the G 550 and AMG G 63.
- Mercedes notes that G-TURN and G-STEERING are off-road functions for loose or low-friction surfaces.[1][3][8][9][19][20][21]
What is a Brabus G-Wagon?
Brabus is an independent tuner based in Bottrop, Germany. Its founder, Bodo Buschmann, started the company in 1977. A Brabus G-Wagon is a Mercedes G-Class, usually a Mercedes-AMG G 63, that Brabus has converted with its own engine upgrades, body parts, wheels and interiors. Brabus sells complete vehicles and also offers parts for the earlier W 463A and the current W 465 G-Class.
brabus.com does not publish prices for these vehicles. The pages offer an inquiry form instead, so this page lists no Brabus prices.
- Brabus says the 900 ROCKET EDITION is limited to 30 units worldwide.
- According to Brabus, the XLP pickup conversion lengthens the wheelbase by 50 cm (19.7 in).
| Brabus model | Based on | Output (Brabus figures) | 0-100 km/h | Top speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BRABUS 900 ROCKET EDITION | Mercedes-AMG G 63 (W 465) | 900 hp / 1,250 Nm (limited to 1,050 Nm in everyday use) | 3.7 s | 149 mph (240 km/h), limited |
| BRABUS 800 SUPERBLACK | Mercedes-AMG G 63 (W 465) | 800 hp / 1,000 Nm | 4.0 s | 149 mph (240 km/h) |
| BRABUS XLP 800 ADVENTURE (pickup) | Mercedes-AMG G 63 (W 465) | 800 hp / 1,000 Nm | 4.8 s | 130 mph (210 km/h), limited |
G-Wagon interior (2025 on)
The 2025 redesign made MBUX standard on the G-Class for the first time, with a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia display. Standard features also include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MBUX Augmented Reality navigation and a voice assistant with about 20 G-specific commands. Optional rear-seat entertainment adds two 11.6-inch touch displays.
The OFFROAD COCKPIT shows position, compass, altitude, steering angle, tire pressure and differential-lock status. A 'Transparent Hood' view works with the standard 360-degree camera to show what is under the front of the vehicle. For 2027, Mercedes made a fingerprint scanner for MBUX profiles standard.[5][7]
Buying a used G-Wagon: know which generation you're looking at
Every used US G-Wagon falls into one of three groups. Model years 2002–2018 are the long-running W 463. Model years 2019–2024 are the redesigned W 463A, with a 4.0L V8 biturbo in both the G 550 and AMG G 63. Model years 2025 and later are the current generation, with a mild-hybrid inline-6 G 550, an AMG G 63 with hybrid assist, and the electric G 580. G-Classes from before 2002 were never sold new by Mercedes-Benz USA, so a US example from those years was imported privately.
- Check the model year against the generation: the 2019 redesign changed the body, interior and front suspension.
- A 2025-or-later G 550 has an inline-6, not a V8.
- On a claimed AMG G 63, the VIN decode and factory build data should confirm it is a factory AMG.
- Run the VIN for open recalls; several 2019–2021 campaigns cover rear door latches and wiring.
- For a G 580, note the model year: EPA range is 239 miles for 2025–2026 and 249 miles for 2027.[2][7][10][11][19][20][22]
G-Wagon (G-Class) generations & model years
| Generation | Model years | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| W 460 | 1979–1992 (civilian; not sold new in the US) | The original G model, presented in February 1979 and built in Graz with Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Almost 52,000 civilian 460s were built, with the 300 GD the best seller; it was also sold as the Puch G in some markets.[14] |
| W 461 | 1992–2021 (professional and non-civilian use; not sold new in the US) | The utility successor to the 460 for professional users, with models such as the 290 GD and later the G 270 CDI and G 280 CDI 'Worker'. Mercedes notes individual non-civilian versions stayed in production after civilian sales ended.[15] |
| W 463 | US 2002–2018 (introduced 1989 elsewhere) | Presented in September 1989 as the more comfortable, car-like G with permanent all-wheel drive and three push-button differential locks. Mercedes-Benz USA began official US sales for 2002, including the G55 AMG; the name G-Class has been official since 1993.[11][12][16] |
| W 463A (2019 redesign) | 2019–2024 | The most significant redesign in the G's history to that point, with an updated interior and independent front suspension. US launch models were the G 550 (4.0L V8 biturbo, 416 hp) at $124,500 and the AMG G 63 (577 hp) at $147,500.[10][12][23] |
| W 465 (current) | 2025–present | The current G-Class added MBUX infotainment, a 3.0L inline-6 mild-hybrid G 550, an AMG G 63 with 48-volt hybrid assist and the battery-electric G 580 with EQ Technology. Brabus labels its current G 63-based conversions as W 465.[7][8][25] |
G-Wagon (G-Class) known issues & recalls
Since the 2019 redesign, most G-Class recalls have been narrow fixes: rear door latches, routing of wiring harnesses, a differential-lock module that could switch off stability control, and labeling. Early 2025-on vehicles have had campaigns for a stability-control warning light, a front radar board and incorrect wheel bolts on some G 580s. Check any specific vehicle's VIN for open recalls before buying.
| Campaign | Date | Model years | Component | Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 26V198000 | 2026-03-27 | 2025 (G 580) | Wheels | Some 2025 G 580s may have been built with the wrong wheel bolts, which could let a wheel loosen; dealers will replace the bolts free of charge.[22] |
| 25V711000 | 2025-10-17 | 2025 (AMG G 63, G 580) | Forward collision avoidance | On a small number of vehicles, a front short-range radar circuit board can fail, disabling automatic emergency braking and related driver-assistance features.[22] |
| 25V254000 | 2025-04-17 | 2025 (G 550, G 580, AMG G 63) | Electronic stability control | The stability-control system may show the wrong warning light during a fault, which does not meet FMVSS 126 and 101.[22] |
| 24V659000 | 2024-09-09 | 2019–2023 (G 550); 2019–2022 (G 63) | Latches/locks/linkages | Some vehicles that received a replacement right rear door latch may have a latch that does not fully engage or release.[22] |
| 23V097000 | 2023-02-17 | 2019–2021 (G 550, AMG G 63) | Electrical system | A front-axle wiring harness can chafe against an oil cooler, which may disable ABS and stability control.[22] |
| 23V851000 | 2023-12-15 | 2022–2023 (AMG G 63 4x4²) | Power train | On AMG G 63 4x4² special editions, the rear differential housing can crack and leak oil.[22] |
| 21V353000 | 2021-05-14 | 2019–2021 (G 550, G 63) | Latches/locks/linkages | Parts inside the rear door latches may stop the rear doors from latching or opening properly.[22] |
| 20V247000 | 2020-05-01 | 2019–2020 (G 550, G 63) | Equipment | The embossed child-lock symbol on the rear doors may show the wrong lock position.[22] |
| 20V090000 | 2020-02-14 | 2019–2020 (G 550, G 63) | Electronic stability control | A resistor in the differential-lock module can fail and switch off stability control and ABS while driving.[22] |
