What type of oil does my car take?

The one your owner's manual specifies: a viscosity grade (such as SAE 0W-20) and usually a performance standard (such as API SP or a manufacturer spec). Pick your vehicle and year below to see what the manual says.

What do the numbers in 0W-20 mean?

The first number with the W describes how easily the oil flows when cold — lower flows better at start-up. The second number is its thickness at normal operating temperature. Use the grade your manual lists.

Can I use a different viscosity than the manual says?

Some manuals allow alternatives for certain climates; where they do, we note it. Otherwise stick to the listed grade, since engine clearances and fuel-economy ratings are designed around it.

Do I need synthetic oil?

Many newer engines call for low-viscosity grades that are typically synthetic or synthetic-blend. If the manual names a spec, any oil carrying that approval meets it.
