Can you get option codes from a BMW VIN?

Yes — but not from a free VIN decoder. The 17 characters of a VIN encode the basics (year, model, body, engine, plant); they do not encode factory options. The options and their option codes live in the vehicle's production record, which the VIN unlocks. That record is what the CarWhere build sheet reads.

What a BMW options lookup returns

Example from a real 2026 BMW X5 xDrive40i build sheet (VIN withheld):

ZPKParking Assistance Package
6U3Live Cockpit Pro (incl. head-up display)

You get the options and packages the car was built with and their BMW codes — typically 5 or more on a 2016-or-newer BMW. US-market VINs only; European-market VINs are flagged before you pay.

Where to find the VIN on a BMW

The VIN is at the base of the windshield on the driver side, on the driver door-jamb label, and on the title, registration and insurance card.

BMW options by VIN — FAQ

Can I see BMW factory options from the VIN?

Yes. Options are not encoded in the VIN characters themselves, but the VIN identifies the car's production record, which lists its factory options and packages with their codes. Enter the VIN above to check availability.

How do I confirm a BMW really has the M Sport package?

Look for the M Sport code on the factory options list — 337 on many older cars, ZMP as a package code on recent US models. Badges and steering wheels get swapped; the production record does not.

Is a free VIN decoder enough to see BMW options?

No. Free decoders read the government VIN database, which only carries the basics — year, model, body, engine, plant. Factory options and their option codes are not encoded in the 17 VIN characters; they live in the vehicle's production record, which is what the build sheet pulls.

What does it cost?

$9.99 for one VIN, one time — no subscription. We check the VIN for factory build data before you pay, and the report also includes open recalls and a market price check.

Is this an official manufacturer document?

No. It is reconstructed from VIN-level production data and labeled that way. CarWhere is independent and not affiliated with the manufacturer.
