Component: Service brakes

Grand Cherokee model years: 2012–2013 · about 18,780 vehicles in the whole campaign

The problem: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured October 11, 2011, through October 1, 2012. Under certain braking events, the Ready Alert Braking System (RAB) may result in the driver experiencing a hard brake pedal feel.

The risk: If the driver experiences a hard brake pedal, the driver may not push the pedal as intended, lengthening the distance needed to stop the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS module software, free of charge. The recall began on April 3, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number associated with this recall is P05.

Component: Electronic stability control

Grand Cherokee model years: 2014 · about 90,981 vehicles in the whole campaign

The problem: Chrysler Group, LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 8, 2013, through August 20, 2013. Due to a disruption of computer communications and loose alternator ground wires, the affected vehicles may experience random illumination of multiple instrument cluster warning lights, loss of cluster illumination and loss of anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) function. Because of these conditions, the vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 101, "Controls and Displays," and No. 126, "Electronic Stability Control Systems."

The risk: A loss of ABS and ESC function reduces the driver's ability to control the vehicle. Drivers would not be warned of brake system failures or any other failures which would be illuminated on the dashboard display. Either condition increases the risk of a crash.

The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the ABS and instrument cluster module software and tighten the alternator ground wire, free of charge. The recall began on November 19, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N58.

Without properly functioning parking lamps these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

The risk: Without parking lamps, the vehicle may not be as visible to other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash.

The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will update the Central Body Controller software, free of charge. The recall BEGAN ON September 12, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N42.

The problem: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The fuel tanks in these vehicles are at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts.

The risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.

The fix: Owners may take their vehicles to dealers and the dealers will perform a free inspection of the rear structure. On vehicles in the recall that are not equipped with a tow hitch, Chrysler will install a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles in the recall that are equipped with an aftermarket tow hitch, Chrysler will assess whether the hitch and surrounding areas show evidence of sharp edges or other puncture risks. If so, Chrysler will replace the tow hitch with a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles already equipped with a Chrysler designed tow hitch, Chrysler will inspect the area around the tow hitch installation, and if any installation issues are identified, they will be repaired free of charge. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.

The risk: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.

The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

The risk: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.

The fix: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. How to check if your Grand Cherokee has an open recall

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the door-jamb sticker, or your registration.
  2. Enter it in the free VIN recall check. It queries NHTSA for your exact vehicle, not just the model.
  3. If a recall is open, call any Jeep dealer's service department to book the free repair. Bring the recall number from the list above.
  4. Buying used? Ask the seller for the dealer's recall-completion printout before you pay.

Or browse by year, for example the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee recall check.

Recalls are only part of the picture. Owner complaints show which years have the most problems: Jeep Grand Cherokee years to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

How many recalls does the Jeep Grand Cherokee have?

136 NHTSA safety recall campaigns cover the Jeep Grand Cherokee across model years 1995–2026. A single campaign often spans several model years, so the per-year counts in the table add up to more than 136. The 2023 model year has the most, with 21.

What is the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee recall?

26V562000, filed with NHTSA on Sep 1, 2026: suspension (rear, springs, coil springs), covering 2022–2023 Grand Cherokee models. The fix is free at Jeep dealers.

What is the biggest Jeep Grand Cherokee recall?

By vehicles covered, 18V332000 (May 17, 2018), a electrical system campaign covering about 4,815,661 vehicles in total. That count is for the whole campaign, which can include other models besides the Grand Cherokee.

How do I check if my Jeep Grand Cherokee has an open recall?

Run your 17-character VIN through a VIN recall check. A model-level list can't tell you whether your car was built in the affected range or has already been repaired. Any Jeep dealer can also look up the VIN and do the repair.

Are Jeep recall repairs free?

Yes. Safety-recall repairs are done free at franchised Jeep dealers, whether or not the warranty has expired and wherever you bought the car. Manufacturers must offer a free remedy for vehicles up to 15 years old at the time the recall is filed, and many still repair older ones.

Sources and method

  • NHTSA recalls database: every campaign for the JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE, queried by model year through NHTSA's public recalls API (api.nhtsa.gov).
  • Affected-vehicle counts are NHTSA's "potential units affected" for the whole campaign, which can include other models.
  • Campaigns filed under a separate NHTSA model name (for example a hybrid or heavy-duty variant) are not included here.
  • Data pulled Nov 7, 2026. Problem, risk and fix text is NHTSA's own campaign wording.
