The problem: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MULTI-PURPOSE VEHICLES AND LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. THE LUG NUTS ON THESE VEHICLES MAY NOT CREATE SUFFICIENT CLAMP LOAD ALLOWING WHEEL MOVEMENT IN RELATION TO THE HUB/ROTOR MOUNTING SURFACE.

The risk: THIS CAN RESULT IN THE LOOSENING OF LUG NUTS, STUD FATIGUE FAILURE, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR A WHEEL SEPARATION FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.

The fix: OWNERS OF THESE VEHICLES WILL BE RECEIVING TWO NOTIFICATIONS. THE FIRST NOTIFICATION, WHICH BEGAN IN MAY 1998, WILL PROVIDE AN INTERIM REPAIR PROCEDURE UNTIL PARTS BECOME AVAILABLE. THIS INTERIM PROCEDURE CAN BE COMPLETED BY OWNERS OR THEIR DEALERS. IT SPECIFIES THAT THE LUG NUT TORQUE MUST BE VERIFIED TO BE 100 LBS. Component: Powertrain / transmission (automatic transmission, gear position indication (prndl))

Navigator model years: 1998 · about 866,000 vehicles in the whole campaign

The problem: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: LIGHT DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS AND MULTI-PURPOSE PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY WAS NOT FULLY ATTACHED TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET, THE SHIFT CABLE ASSEMBLY CAN COME OUT OF THE BRACKET. THE VEHICLE OPERATOR WOULD THEN NOT BE ABLE TO SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION FROM ONE OF THE DRIVE GEAR POSITIONS INTO THE PARK POSITION EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WOULD INDICATE "PARK."

The risk: THE CONDITION WOULD NOT ALLOW A DISENGAGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE PARK POSITION OR AFFECT PROPER NEUTRAL START SWITCH OPERATION. UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR IF THE PARKING BRAKE WAS NOT SET.

The fix: DEALERS WILL MAKE THE PROPER ATTACHMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CONTROL CABLE TO THE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET AND ADD A TIE STRAP TO THAT CONNECTION.

How to check if your Navigator has an open recall

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the door-jamb sticker, or your registration.
  2. Enter it in the free VIN recall check. It queries NHTSA for your exact vehicle, not just the model.
  3. If a recall is open, call any Lincoln dealer's service department to book the free repair. Bring the recall number from the list above.
  4. Buying used? Ask the seller for the dealer's recall-completion printout before you pay.

Or browse by year, for example the 2027 Lincoln Navigator recall check.

Recalls are only part of the picture. Owner complaints show which years have the most problems: Lincoln Navigator years to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

How many recalls does the Lincoln Navigator have?

72 NHTSA safety recall campaigns cover the Lincoln Navigator across model years 1997–2027. A single campaign often spans several model years, so the per-year counts in the table add up to more than 72. The 2022 model year has the most, with 14.

What is the latest Lincoln Navigator recall?

26V691000, filed with NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026: seats (front assembly, power adjust), covering 2025–2027 Navigator models. The fix is free at Lincoln dealers.

What is the biggest Lincoln Navigator recall?

By vehicles covered, 05V388000 (Sep 7, 2005), a speed control / throttle campaign covering about 4,500,000 vehicles in total. That count is for the whole campaign, which can include other models besides the Navigator.

How do I check if my Lincoln Navigator has an open recall?

Run your 17-character VIN through a VIN recall check. A model-level list can't tell you whether your car was built in the affected range or has already been repaired. Any Lincoln dealer can also look up the VIN and do the repair.

Are Lincoln recall repairs free?

Yes. Safety-recall repairs are done free at franchised Lincoln dealers, whether or not the warranty has expired and wherever you bought the car. Manufacturers must offer a free remedy for vehicles up to 15 years old at the time the recall is filed, and many still repair older ones.

Sources and method

  • NHTSA recalls database: every campaign for the LINCOLN NAVIGATOR, queried by model year through NHTSA's public recalls API (api.nhtsa.gov).
  • Affected-vehicle counts are NHTSA's "potential units affected" for the whole campaign, which can include other models.
  • Campaigns filed under a separate NHTSA model name (for example a hybrid or heavy-duty variant) are not included here.
  • Data pulled Nov 7, 2026. Problem, risk and fix text is NHTSA's own campaign wording.
