Component: Electrical system (wiring, interior/under dash)

Outlander model years: 2003 · about 43,649 vehicles in the whole campaign

The problem: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, WATER COULD ENTER THE FRONT FLOORBOARD AREA FROM OPENINGS IN THE SIDE SILL OR UPPER DASH AREA. THIS WATER COULD COLLECT UNDER THE SEAT AND CAUSE ELECTRICAL CORROSION TO OCCUR IN THE HARNESS CONNECTORS THAT CONTAIN THE WIRING FOR THE SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER, SIDE AIR BAG IMPACT SENSOR, AND STOP LAMPS.

The risk: ELECTRICAL CORROSION OF THE HARNESS COULD CAUSE THE SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER TO MALFUNCTION, THE SIDE AIR BAG NOT TO DEPLOY AND/OR THE BRAKE LAMPS NOT TO ILLUMINATE OR TO FALSELY ILLUMINATE.

The fix: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE SIDE SILLS AND DASH PANEL FOR OPENINGS THAT MAY ALLOW WATER LEAKAGE INTO THE VEHICLE CABIN. IN ADDITION TO SEALING ANY OPENINGS THAT MAY BE FOUND, THE WIRING CONNECTORS WILL BE INSPECTED FOR SIGNS OF ELECTRICAL CORROSION. THE FLOOR HARNESS WILL BE REPLACED IF IT HAS ANY SIGNS OF WATER DAMAGE OR ELECTRICAL CORROSION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 23, 2003. The fix: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER TO ELIMINATE THIS CONDITION. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JANUARY 29, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI AT 1-800-222-0037.

How to check if your Outlander has an open recall

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the driver-side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the door-jamb sticker, or your registration.
  2. Enter it in the free VIN recall check. It queries NHTSA for your exact vehicle, not just the model.
  3. If a recall is open, call any Mitsubishi dealer's service department to book the free repair. Bring the recall number from the list above.
  4. Buying used? Ask the seller for the dealer's recall-completion printout before you pay.

Or browse by year, for example the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander recall check.

Recalls are only part of the picture. Owner complaints show which years have the most problems: Mitsubishi Outlander years to avoid.

Frequently asked questions

How many recalls does the Mitsubishi Outlander have?

41 NHTSA safety recall campaigns cover the Mitsubishi Outlander across model years 2003–2026. A single campaign often spans several model years, so the per-year counts in the table add up to more than 41. The 2009 model year has the most, with 13.

What is the latest Mitsubishi Outlander recall?

26V549000, filed with NHTSA on Aug 25, 2026: backup camera / back-over prevention (software), covering 2025–2026 Outlander models. The fix is free at Mitsubishi dealers.

What is the biggest Mitsubishi Outlander recall?

By vehicles covered, 25V369000 (Jun 2, 2025), a backup camera / back-over prevention campaign covering about 198,940 vehicles in total. That count is for the whole campaign, which can include other models besides the Outlander.

How do I check if my Mitsubishi Outlander has an open recall?

Run your 17-character VIN through a VIN recall check. A model-level list can't tell you whether your car was built in the affected range or has already been repaired. Any Mitsubishi dealer can also look up the VIN and do the repair.

Are Mitsubishi recall repairs free?

Yes. Safety-recall repairs are done free at franchised Mitsubishi dealers, whether or not the warranty has expired and wherever you bought the car. Manufacturers must offer a free remedy for vehicles up to 15 years old at the time the recall is filed, and many still repair older ones.
