What lowers your Colorado's real towing limit
- Since 2023 every Colorado uses a 2.7L turbo four; the 7,700-lb rating requires the Trailering Package, and 4WD trucks also need the limited-slip differential (2026 Colorado trailering chart).
- Without the Trailering Package the base TurboMax is rated 3,500 lbs, and the off-road ZR2 is limited to 6,000 lbs (2026 Chevrolet Trailering Guide).
- On the 2016–2022 Colorado the 7,700-lb peak came only from the Duramax 2.8L diesel (7,600 lbs in most 4WD versions); the 3.6L V6 needed the trailering package to reach 7,000 lbs.
- Chevrolet's guides call for 10–15% tongue weight, up to 770 lbs on the Colorado.
The maximum rating assumes a specific, lightly loaded configuration. Three other limits apply on every tow, and the first one you hit is your real limit:
- Payload. Passengers, cargo, accessories and the trailer's tongue weight all count against payload. The payload figure on your door-jamb Tire and Loading Information placard is the one for your exact vehicle.
- Tongue weight. A conventional trailer typically puts 10–15% of its weight on the hitch, so a 5,000-lb trailer adds roughly 500–750 lbs to the truck or SUV. The hitch receiver has its own tongue-weight limit, printed on the receiver label.
- GCWR. The gross combined weight rating caps the loaded vehicle plus the loaded trailer. Every pound of passengers and cargo added to the vehicle comes off the trailer weight you can pull at GCWR.
Always stay within the lowest of these limits for your specific vehicle.
