What lowers your 3500's real towing limit
- Dual rear wheels and the Cummins HO with 3.42 axle produce the top ratings: 37,020 lb on the 2027 chart vs about 26,940 lb for the same Regular Cab with single rear wheels.
- The highest trailer ratings need a gooseneck: Ram's 2025 chart says a 5th-wheel hitch is required over 23,000 lb and a gooseneck over 30,000 lb; the 2025 press kit gives the 3500 a 23,000-lb conventional maximum.
- Max payload comes from the gas 6.4L HEMI DRW Regular Cab (7,580 lb on 2027 chart) because the diesel adds weight.
- Payload and trailer weight ratings are mutually exclusive, and GVWR/GCWR must never be exceeded.
The maximum rating assumes a specific, lightly loaded configuration. Three other limits apply on every tow, and the first one you hit is your real limit:
