GM 10-speed automatic reliability: years to avoid, problems & recalls

By CarWhere Research · Updated

GM's 10-speed automatic carries wheel-lockup safety recalls on specific versions: 24V-797 for 2020–2022 diesel Silverado and Sierra pickups and 2021 diesel full-size SUVs, 26V-085 for 2022 full-size SUVs with the electronic shifter, and 25V-148 for 2020–2022 Camaro, 2020–2021 CT4/CT5 and 2019–2020 CT6. GM says a worn control valve can cause harsh shifts and, rarely, momentary wheel lockup; its software remedy comes with 15-year/150,000-mile coverage for that condition.

What the GM 10-speed automatic is

GM's 10-speed automatics are rear- and four-wheel-drive Hydra-Matic units. GM service information names 10L60, 10L80, 10L90 and 10L1000 versions, and fueleconomy.gov lists a 10-speed in the Camaro's supercharged V8 from 2017, the Escalade from 2018, all 2021-on Tahoe, Suburban and Yukon models, the Silverado 1500's 3.0L diesel and the Cadillac CT4 2.7L and CT5. Heavy-duty Silverado and Sierra trucks use the Allison-branded 10L1000.

The documented safety issue is wear inside the transmission control valve body. GM's recall reports say the wear can cause harsh shifting and, in rare cases, a momentary wheel lockup on a downshift from eighth gear. GM's remedy is software that watches for the wear and, if found, limits the transmission to fifth gear with a warning, backed by special coverage for the repair.

GM 10-speed automatic years to avoid vs. safer years

“Years to avoid” here means the model years with the most documented action — recalls, manufacturer warranty extensions or court settlements — not a prediction about any single vehicle. A car from these years with completed repairs and good records can be a sound buy; one without them deserves a closer look.

Model years with the most documented problems

  • 2020–2022 Silverado and Sierra diesels (1500 3.0L Duramax and 2500/3500 HD) — Covered by wheel-lockup recall 24V-797, with some 2020–2022 trucks recalled again under 26V-083 for incorrect repair.[15][18]
  • 2021–2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade (2021 diesel; 2022 10-speed with ETRS) — Covered by wheel-lockup recalls 24V-797 (2021 diesels) and 26V-085 (2022 models with the 10-speed and electronic shifter).[15][19]
  • 2020–2022 Camaro, 2020–2021 CT4 and CT5, 2019–2020 CT6 (10-speed) — Covered by wheel-lockup recall 25V-148.[13]

Later or safer years

  • 2022 CT4 and CT5, 2023 Camaro (10-speed) — GM's recall report for 25V-148 says these were built with transmission control software that detects excessive valve wear.[16]
  • Diesel Silverado/Sierra 1500 built after March 21, 2022 and 2500/3500 built after January 11, 2022 — GM's recall report for 24V-797 says these were built with the new transmission control software that detects excessive wear.[14]

Known GM 10-speed automatic problems

Control-valve wear: harsh shifts and momentary rear-wheel lockup (diesel trucks and SUVs) (2020–2022)

GM's recall report for 24V-797 says excess wear in the transmission control valve body can cause a fluid leak and pressure drop, leading to harsh shifting and, in rare cases, a momentary rear-wheel lockup, which GM says occurs on a downshift from eighth gear. GM's chronology cites 1,888 field reports alleging a lock-up received between January 2020 and August 2024. The remedy software monitors the valve and, if it detects wear, limits the transmission to fifth gear and shows a service engine light and reduced-propulsion message.[14][15]

Reported symptoms

  • Harsh shifting
  • Momentary rear-wheel lockup or skid on a downshift
  • Service engine light with a reduced-propulsion message after the recall software detects wear

Control-valve wear: wheel lockup (Camaro and Cadillac sedans) (2019–2022)

Recall 25V-148 applies the same control-valve wear finding to 10-speed Camaro, CT4, CT5 and CT6 models. GM's recall report says it opened the investigation after a 2021 CT5 driver reported both front tires locking up, and that a field search found 115 reports alleging a lock-up, including one alleged accident. The remedy is the same monitoring software.[16][13]

Reported symptoms

  • Harsh shifts or transmission warnings
  • Sudden wheel lockup

Check-engine light and harsh shifts from the line-pressure solenoid (2019–2021)

GM preliminary information PIP5799 covers 10L60, 10L80, 10L90 and 10L1000 vehicles with a check-engine light and harsh shifts that set codes P2812 or P2814. GM attributes it to an electrical fault in control solenoid valve 7 (the line-pressure solenoid) and says the valve body should be replaced if standard diagnostics do not find the root cause.[1]

Reported symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Harsh shifts
  • Codes P2812 or P2814

Gear whine in 4th through 7th gear (some 2022–2023 builds) (2022–2023)

GM preliminary information PIP5928 describes a gear-type whine from 4th through 7th gear on 10L80 units built at GM's Silao plant during two windows in 2022 and 2023, caused by a machining defect in the reaction carrier pinion gears. GM states there is no durability issue; the correction is replacing the reaction carrier and sun gear.[17]

Reported symptoms

  • Whine that starts in 4th gear and can continue through 7th

Buying a used car with the GM 10-speed automatic: what to check

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup and confirm 24V-797, 25V-148, 26V-083 or 26V-085 shows as complete where it applies.
  2. Ask the dealer for the recall repair order; on 2020–2022 trucks also confirm 26V-083, which re-does some incorrect 24V-797 repairs.
  3. If a recall-updated vehicle shows a service engine light and a reduced-propulsion message, have a GM dealer check it — GM says that is how the software flags valve wear, and the repair falls under the 15-year/150,000-mile coverage.
  4. Note the in-service date and mileage to see how much of that coverage remains.
  5. On a test drive, note any harsh downshifts as the vehicle slows.

Frequently asked questions

Which GM 10-speed vehicles are recalled for wheel lockup?

Recall 24V-797 covers 2020–2022 diesel Silverado and Sierra pickups and 2021 diesel Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade. Recall 26V-085 adds 2022 full-size SUVs with the 10-speed and electronic shifter. Recall 25V-148 covers 10-speed 2020–2022 Camaro, 2020–2021 CT4 and CT5, and 2019–2020 CT6.

What does the GM 10-speed recall fix do?

Dealers install transmission control software that monitors the control valve. GM says it detects excess wear about 10,000 miles before a lockup could occur, then limits the transmission to fifth gear and shows a service engine light and reduced-propulsion message so the transmission can be repaired.

Is there an extended warranty on GM 10-speed transmissions?

For vehicles in recalls 24V-797 and 25V-148, GM's owner letters provide special coverage for the control-valve wear condition for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the in-service date, whichever comes first. It does not cover other transmission problems.

Are gas-engine Silverado and Sierra pickups part of recall 24V-797?

No. NHTSA's recall record limits 24V-797 to vehicles with diesel engines, and GM's recall report says gas-engine Escalades use a different transmission and are not affected. Separate recall 26V-085 covers 2022 full-size SUVs with the 10-speed and electronic shifter.

Is the Silverado HD's Allison 10-speed the same family?

Yes. GM identifies the heavy-duty unit as the Allison 10-speed 10L1000, and GM service information groups the 10L1000 with the 10L60, 10L80 and 10L90. Its 2020–2022 diesel Silverado and Sierra HD trucks are included in recall 24V-797.

How CarWhere compiled this page

Every problem, recall, warranty extension and settlement above is CarWhere’s own summary of a primary record — NHTSA recall campaigns, manufacturer service bulletins and warranty-extension notices filed with NHTSA, manufacturer press material, and court or settlement-administrator records — and is numbered to its source below. We list a model year under “years to avoid” only when a manufacturer, regulator or court record ties it to the transmission. Complaint counts come from NHTSA’s public owner-complaint data, counted once per complaint. We do not estimate failure rates or repair costs. See also the years-to-avoid methodology.
