4L60E: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 4L60E is GM's electronically controlled four-speed automatic, used from 1993 to 2013 in Silverado and Sierra pickups, Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, Corvettes and Camaros. It evolved from the 700R4. The most common failures are a burned 3-4 clutch pack, a cracked sun shell and torque converter clutch faults.

The 4L60-E replaced GM's hydraulically controlled 700R4 with electronic shift control, keeping a four-speed layout with an overdrive top gear. GM installed it between 1993 and 2013 in a wide range of rear-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, from S-10 pickups and Camaros to the 1999–2013 Silverado and Sierra and the Tahoe and Suburban. Its name describes four speeds, longitudinal mounting, a weight class around 6,000 pounds, and electronic controls.

Because so many were built and they were often paired with V8 trucks that tow, the 4L60E has a well-known rebuild history. Transmission rebuilders point to the 3-4 clutch pack as its most frequent failure, usually traced to pressure loss in the third-gear circuit, along with the reaction sun shell and wear in the torque converter clutch regulator valve. A pre-purchase drive that checks every shift warm and cold is the best protection.

4L60E problems and what to check

Burned 3-4 clutch pack (1993–2013)

Major repair

Rebuilders name the 3-4 clutch as the 4L60E's most common failure. A technical article from a major transmission-parts supplier says low line pressure or leaks in the third-gear oil circuit cause most 3-4 slipping, with contributors including a flexing original backing plate, a leaking third accumulator check ball and input housing leaks.[3][1]

Symptoms

  • Engine flares or revs on the 2-3 shift without the vehicle accelerating
  • No third or fourth gear
  • Burnt-smelling or dark fluid

Check before buying

  • Drive through all four gears warm and cold and watch for flare on the 2-3 shift
  • Check fluid color and smell
  • Ask for rebuild records and whether upgraded 3-4 parts were used

Reported repair cost: About $1,000–$2,000 for 3-4 clutch and piston repair (shop estimates)[1]

Broken reaction sun shell (1993–2013)

Major repair

Owners and shops report that the sun shell (drive shell) can crack or strip under load, leaving the transmission without first, second or reverse.[1]

Symptoms

  • No first or second gear, or no reverse
  • Slipping and grinding noise

Check before buying

  • Test reverse and first-gear take-off from a stop
  • Listen for grinding on engagement

Reported repair cost: About $1,700–$1,900 for a full rebuild (shop quotes)[1]

Torque converter clutch and harsh 1-2 shift (1993–2013)

Moderate

Wear in the torque converter clutch regulator valve bore, a worn 1-2 accumulator or a faulty throttle position sensor can cause harsh 1-2 shifts and converter-clutch codes. Rebuilders also link TCC regulator wear to extra heat in the 3-4 clutch.[1][3]

Symptoms

  • Harsh or delayed 1-2 shift
  • Check-engine light with torque converter clutch codes
  • Shudder or lack of lock-up at highway speed

Check before buying

  • Scan for transmission and TCC codes
  • Watch for converter lock-up (rpm drop) at steady highway speed

Frequently asked questions

What years did GM use the 4L60E?

GM installed the 4L60E from 1993 to 2013, including 1999–2013 Silverado and Sierra pickups, Corvettes through 2004 and Camaros through 2002.

How much torque can a 4L60E handle?

Its commonly cited rated capacity is about 360 lb-ft. Trucks that tow heavily often have rebuilt units with upgraded 3-4 clutch parts.

What usually fails on a 4L60E?

The 3-4 clutch pack is the most common failure, followed by the reaction sun shell and torque converter clutch or valve-body wear.

How do I check a 4L60E before buying?

Drive it warm and cold through every gear, watch for a flare on the 2-3 shift, test reverse, check that the converter locks up on the highway, and inspect the fluid for a burnt smell.
