Engines, equipment and previous-generation trims: Escalade trim levels explained
Used Escalade: generations and model years
Used Escalades for sale span 2 generations in CarWhere's data, with the 5th generation (2021–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.
5th generation (2021–present) · 2021–presentCurrent
Redesigned for 2021 with an independent rear suspension, a 3.0L Duramax diesel option and the high-performance Escalade-V added for 2023. The 2025 refresh brought a 55-inch curved display, standard Super Cruise on every trim, available 24-inch wheels and power doors, and dropped the diesel. The long-wheelbase ESV (134.1 vs 120.9 in.) offers 41.5 cu ft behind the third row vs 25.5. The electric Escalade IQ is a separate model. Prices below are 2025 launch MSRPs; 4WD added $3,000.
4th generation (2015–2020) · 2015–2020
Every fourth-generation Escalade and ESV used a 420-hp 6.2L V8, paired first with a 6-speed, then an 8-speed and, from 2018, a 10-speed automatic. Trims launched as Base, Luxury and Premium; Platinum returned for 2016 and the lineup was renamed Standard, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum for 2017, with a Sport package added for 2019.
Years to avoid, best years and known issues
Before you shortlist a used Escalade, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.
What to check before buying a used Escalade
- Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
- Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
- Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
- Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
- Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
- Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for an Escalade?
Start from the starting MSRP of the trim you want — 2025 Escalade pricing begins at $87,595 — and negotiate the selling price as a discount off MSRP, before rebates and with no dealer add-ons. CarWhere doesn't have enough verified Escalade deals yet to publish a median discount. A used Escalade's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.
When is the best time to buy an Escalade?
CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. Negotiating the price matters more than the calendar.
Should I buy a new or used Escalade?
New gets you the current 5th generation Escalade (2021–present) with a full factory warranty, from $87,595 MSRP. Used, the main alternative is the 4th generation (2015–2020). Before you buy a used one, check the years to avoid and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
