Used Silverado: generations and model years

Used Silverados for sale span 3 generations in CarWhere's data, with the Next generation (2027–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.

Next generation (2027–present) · 2027–presentCurrent

Chevrolet revealed the redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500 in June 2026 for an end-of-2026 launch. It runs seven trims, swaps the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s for new 5.7L (402 hp) and 6.6L (481 hp) V8s, upgrades the TurboMax to 350 hp with a 10-speed and keeps the 3.0L Duramax. The LT is renamed Silverado, and the RST and LTZ are dropped.

Fourth generation (2019–2026) · 2019–2026

Launched for 2019 with eight trims. The 2022 refresh added the ZR2 and a new interior, the 3.0L Duramax arrived for 2020 and was uprated to 305 hp/495 lb-ft for 2023, and the 2.7L turbo became the TurboMax (310 hp/430 lb-ft) for 2024. MSRPs below are 2026 base prices; GM's equipment-group codes come from its 2026 fleet guide.

Third generation (2014–2018) · 2014–2018

The K2XX Silverado 1500 used a 4.3L V6 (285 hp), 5.3L V8 (355 hp) and 6.2L V8 (420 hp). High Country debuted with this generation, LS returned for 2015 and Custom was added with the 2016 refresh. Launch MSRPs are not listed here because we could not source them from GM.

Years to avoid, best years and known issues

Before you shortlist a used Silverado, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.

What to check before buying a used Silverado

  1. Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
  2. Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
  3. Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
  4. Inspect the frame, bed and hitch for rust, weld repairs and heavy-towing wear; check the receiver and wiring harness.
  5. If it was used for towing, look for transmission fluid that is dark or smells burnt, and ask whether it had a factory tow package.
  6. On 4x4 models, engage four-wheel drive (high and low) on the test drive and listen for clunks from the transfer case and axles.
  7. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
  8. Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
  9. Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pay for a Silverado?

On a new Silverado, verified CarWhere buyers paid a median 9.2% below MSRP — about $5,600 — across 59 deals (Dec 2025–May 2026). The middle half paid between 6.3% and 13.6% off. Use that as your benchmark: a discount off MSRP measured before rebates, with no dealer add-ons. A used Silverado's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.

When is the best time to buy a Silverado?

CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. That's narrower than the spread between Silverado buyers themselves: the middle half paid between 6.3% and 13.6% off MSRP. Negotiation matters more than the calendar.

Should I buy a new or used Silverado?

New gets you the current Next generation Silverado (2027–present) with a full factory warranty, from $38,600 MSRP. Verified buyers paid a median 9.2% off. Used, the main alternative is the Fourth generation (2019–2026), and 1 older generation goes back to 2014–2018. Before you buy a used one, check the years to avoid and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
