Used RX: generations and model years

Used RXes for sale span 2 generations in CarWhere's data, with the RX fifth generation (2023–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.

RX fifth generation (2023–present) · 2023–presentCurrent

The fifth-generation RX moved to the GA-K platform and a 2.4L turbo four for the RX 350, with the RX 350h, RX 450h+ plug-in and the 366-hp RX 500h. Lexus launched it for 2023 at a starting MSRP of $48,750. For 2027 the Standard grade is dropped (in 2026 the RX 350 Standard FWD was $52,775 with DPH), leaving Premium, Premium+, Luxury, F SPORT Design, F SPORT Handling and F SPORT Performance; red calipers are a new option on the F SPORT Handling and Performance grades. The 2027 RX arrives at dealers this fall.

RX fourth generation (2016–2022) · 2016–2022

The fourth-generation RX debuted at the 2015 New York Auto Show as a 2016 model, with a 3.5L V6 RX 350, the 308-hp RX 450h hybrid and, later, the three-row RX 350L and RX 450hL. Lexus published 2022 grade pricing only in a separate pricing sheet, so only the 2022 Black Line special-edition prices are given here.

Years to avoid, best years and known issues

Before you shortlist a used RX, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.

What to check before buying a used RX

  1. Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
  2. Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
  3. Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
  4. Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
  5. Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
  6. Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
  7. Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
  8. Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I pay for an RX?

On a new RX, verified CarWhere buyers paid a median 2.8% below MSRP — about $2,000 — across 26 deals (Mar 2026–Jul 2026). The middle half paid between 0.2% and 4.8% off, and 7.7% paid over MSRP. Use that as your benchmark: a discount off MSRP measured before rebates, with no dealer add-ons. A used RX's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.

When is the best time to buy an RX?

CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. That's narrower than the spread between RX buyers themselves: the middle half paid between 0.2% and 4.8% off MSRP. Negotiation matters more than the calendar.

Should I buy a new or used RX?

New gets you the current RX fifth generation RX (2023–present) with a full factory warranty, from $53,900 MSRP. Verified buyers paid a median 2.8% off. Used, the main alternative is the RX fourth generation (2016–2022). Before you buy a used one, check its recall history and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
