Used G-Wagon: generations and model years
Used G-Wagons for sale span 5 generations in CarWhere's data, with the W 465 (2025–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.
W 460 · 1979–1992 (civilian; not sold new in the US)
The original G model, presented in February 1979 and built in Graz with Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Almost 52,000 civilian 460s were built, with the 300 GD the best seller; it was also sold as the Puch G in some markets.
W 461 · 1992–2021 (professional and non-civilian use; not sold new in the US)
The utility successor to the 460 for professional users, with models such as the 290 GD and later the G 270 CDI and G 280 CDI 'Worker'. Mercedes notes individual non-civilian versions stayed in production after civilian sales ended.
W 463 · US 2002–2018 (introduced 1989 elsewhere)
Presented in September 1989 as the more comfortable, car-like G with permanent all-wheel drive and three push-button differential locks. Mercedes-Benz USA began official US sales for 2002, including the G55 AMG; the name G-Class has been official since 1993.
W 463A (2019 redesign) · 2019–2024
The most significant redesign in the G's history to that point, with an updated interior and independent front suspension. US launch models were the G 550 (4.0L V8 biturbo, 416 hp) at $124,500 and the AMG G 63 (577 hp) at $147,500.
W 465 (current) · 2025–presentCurrent
The current G-Class added MBUX infotainment, a 3.0L inline-6 mild-hybrid G 550, an AMG G 63 with 48-volt hybrid assist and the battery-electric G 580 with EQ Technology. Brabus labels its current G 63-based conversions as W 465.
Years to avoid, best years and known issues
Before you shortlist a used G-Wagon, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.
What to check before buying a used G-Wagon
- Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
- Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
- Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
- Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
- Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
- Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a G-Wagon?
Start from the starting MSRP of the trim you want — G-Wagon pricing begins at $153,900 — and negotiate the selling price as a discount off MSRP, before rebates and with no dealer add-ons. CarWhere doesn't have enough verified G-Wagon deals yet to publish a median discount. A used G-Wagon's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.
When is the best time to buy a G-Wagon?
CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. Negotiating the price matters more than the calendar.
Should I buy a new or used G-Wagon?
New gets you the current W 465 G-Wagon (2025–present) with a full factory warranty, from $153,900 MSRP. Used, the main alternative is the W 460 (1979–1992 (civilian; not sold new in the US)), and 3 older generations go back to 2019–2024. Before you buy a used one, check its recall history and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
