Engines, equipment and previous-generation trims: Cayenne trim levels explained
Used Cayenne: generations and model years
Used Cayennes for sale span 6 generations in CarWhere's data, with the 9YA facelift (2024–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.
9PA (2003–2010) · 2003–2010
Porsche's first SUV, developed alongside the Volkswagen Touareg and built in Leipzig, launched in the US for model year 2003 as the V8 Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo; a 3.2-liter VR6 base model followed for 2004 and a Turbo S for 2006. The 2008 model-year facelift (often called 957) brought direct-injected engines: a 3.6-liter VR6 and 4.8-liter V8s, plus the GTS, which could be ordered with a six-speed manual. Late-cycle specials included the off-road-themed S Transsyberia and the 550-hp Turbo S.
958.1 (2011–2014) · 2011–2014
The second-generation Cayenne was lighter than its predecessor and switched to an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic; the base V6 kept a 6-speed manual option in the US. It added the first hybrid Porsche, the supercharged-V6 Cayenne S Hybrid, and later a US-market diesel (MY2013), the GTS (MY2013) and Turbo S (MY2014).
958.2 (2015–2018) · 2015–2018
The mid-cycle update restyled the front and rear and dropped the manual gearbox. The naturally aspirated V8 in the S gave way to a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6, and the S Hybrid became the S E-Hybrid plug-in hybrid. A V6 GTS and a 570-hp Turbo S arrived for 2016, and a Platinum Edition ran in the final 2018 model year.
9YA (2019–2023) · 2019–2023
The third-generation Cayenne moved to the MLB Evo platform with new turbo V6 and V8 engines and a standard 8-speed Tiptronic S. The plug-in hybrid became the E-Hybrid (and later the 670-hp Turbo S E-Hybrid). A sloped-roof Cayenne Coupe body arrived for 2020. The V8 GTS returned for 2021, and the track-tuned, coupe-only Turbo GT followed for 2022.
9YA facelift (2024–present) · 2024–presentCurrent
The 2024 update was the most extensive mid-cycle revision in Cayenne history. The S returned to a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the base V6 gained power, and the E-Hybrid got a 174-hp motor and a 25.9 kWh battery. Two-valve dampers became standard, the interior gained a curved digital cluster and an optional passenger display, and the gear selector moved to the dash. The S E-Hybrid and Turbo E-Hybrid returned for 2024, and a 493-hp GTS followed for 2025.
Cayenne Electric (2026–present) · 2026–presentCurrent
An all-electric Cayenne, revealed in November 2025 and sold alongside the gas and plug-in hybrid models rather than replacing them. It uses a 113 kWh battery with up to 400 kW DC charging, optional inductive charging, and a NACS (J3400) port on US cars. The wheelbase is longer than the combustion model's, at 119.0 in. US deliveries were scheduled for late summer 2026, and pricing carries over unchanged for MY2027.
Years to avoid, best years and known issues
Before you shortlist a used Cayenne, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.
What to check before buying a used Cayenne
- Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
- Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
- Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
- Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
- Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
- Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a Cayenne?
Start from the starting MSRP of the trim you want — Cayenne pricing begins at $79,200 — and negotiate the selling price as a discount off MSRP, before rebates and with no dealer add-ons. CarWhere doesn't have enough verified Cayenne deals yet to publish a median discount. A used Cayenne's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.
When is the best time to buy a Cayenne?
CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. Negotiating the price matters more than the calendar.
Should I buy a new or used Cayenne?
New gets you the current 9YA facelift Cayenne (2024–present) with a full factory warranty, from $79,200 MSRP. Used, the main alternative is the 9PA (2003–2010), and 3 older generations go back to 2019–2023. Before you buy a used one, check the years to avoid and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
