Porsche tools & data

By CarWhere Research · Updated

CarWhere’s Porsche hub collects free tools for owners, shoppers and clubs: a Porsche VIN decoder, 265+ factory option codes, paint codes, production numbers by model and year, known issues by generation and a printable car show window card. Each data page lists its sources, from Porsche’s own press releases to NHTSA recall records.

Porsche keeps unusually detailed records. Every car leaves Zuffenhausen, Leipzig, Osnabrück or Bratislava with a list of factory codes that defines it, down to the stitching color. These pages explain how to read those codes, how many of a given model were made, and what to look for on a particular generation before you buy one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out what options my Porsche has?

Most Porsches carry an option sticker listing the factory codes — in the front trunk on many models and in the maintenance booklet. Look the codes up in the CarWhere Porsche option code list. If the sticker or booklet is missing, a build sheet pulled from the VIN lists the factory options as built.

Can I decode a Porsche VIN for free?

Yes. The free CarWhere Porsche VIN decoder returns the model year, model, body style, engine and assembly plant from the public NHTSA VIN database. Factory option codes and original paint are not encoded in the VIN itself, so they need a build sheet or the option sticker.

How many Porsche 911s have been built?

Porsche built its one-millionth 911, a Carrera S, at Zuffenhausen on 11 May 2017, and had passed 1,049,330 series-production 911s by the end of October 2018. Generation-by-generation totals with their sources are on the CarWhere Porsche production numbers page.

What are the most common Porsche problems?

It depends on the generation. The best-known are the intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing and cylinder bore scoring on 1997–2008 M96/M97 flat-sixes, plastic coolant pipes on early Cayenne V8s, and model-specific recalls on newer cars. The known-issues pages list each issue by generation with sources.

What is a Porsche car show window card?

A window card is a printed display sheet placed on the dash or windshield at car shows that tells spectators the car’s year, model, color, notable options and history. The free CarWhere window card maker builds one from your details and prints it on a standard page.
