Honda hybrid and electric history: Insight, Civic Hybrid, Clarity, Prologue and e:FCEV

By CarWhere Research · Updated

Honda sold America's first mass-production hybrid, the Insight, from December 1999. Civic and Accord hybrids followed in 2003 and 2005, then the two-motor hybrids that now power the Civic, Accord and CR-V. Honda added the Clarity line, the Prologue EV in 2024 and the CR-V e:FCEV, and says it has sold over a million electrified vehicles.

Honda hybrids and electrified vehicles history history

Honda's electrified history in the US starts before the hybrid. The battery-electric EV Plus appears in EPA listings for 1998–1999, with an 81-mile EPA range, and in 2002 Honda's FCX became the first government-certified fuel cell vehicle.

The first-generation Insight went on sale in December 1999 as the first mass-production hybrid sold in America. It used a 1.0-liter engine and an aluminum body nearly 50% lighter than a steel Civic Hatchback body. Honda built it at Takanezawa, Japan, alongside the NSX and S2000.

Honda says hybrids made up more than a quarter of its 2024 sales, and its cumulative electrified sales exceed one million. In 2023 the CR-V Hybrid was America's best-selling hybrid and the Accord Hybrid the most popular hybrid car.[1],[3],[12],[16]

Engine and drivetrain facts

  • The 2000 Insight paired a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with a 5-speed manual. Honda's original EPA rating was 61 mpg city and 70 mpg highway; EPA's current method rates it at 49 city / 61 highway / 53 combined.
  • The 2010 Insight used Honda's fifth-generation Integrated Motor Assist: a 1.3-liter four, a 10-kW motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery and a CVT, for 98 hp combined.
  • Honda's two-motor hybrid drives the wheels mostly with an electric motor. In the 2019 Insight it made 151 hp combined from a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine; the 2023 Accord and CR-V use a 2.0-liter version with 204 hp.
  • The 2024 Prologue has an 85-kWh battery and 212 hp (FWD) or 288 hp (AWD), with EPA range estimates of 273–296 miles.
  • The CR-V e:FCEV is a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with a 130-kW motor; Honda quotes a 270-mile driving range and lists it at $50,000 before a $1,450 destination charge, for lease only.

What to check before you buy one

  • Identify which hybrid system you are buying: 2003–2015 Civic Hybrids and 2000–2014 Insights use Integrated Motor Assist, while 2014-on Accord Hybrids, 2019–2022 Insights and CR-V Hybrids use the two-motor system.
  • On older IMA hybrids, ask for records of hybrid-battery replacement and check the VIN for open recalls; NHTSA campaign 11V106 (36,656 vehicles) covered the IMA DC-DC voltage converter on 2006–2007 Civic Hybrids.
  • For a Prologue, check remaining battery warranty coverage and charging history with the seller, and confirm FWD or AWD from the VIN.
  • The CR-V e:FCEV is offered for lease only, so used examples will be off-lease; confirm hydrogen fueling is practical where you live before considering one.

How to verify a Honda hybrids and electrified vehicles history's factory options

A used Honda's model, engine and drivetrain are fixed at the factory. CarWhere decodes the 17-character VIN and, where licensed factory build data exists, lists the equipment the car was built with. It does not promise a complete option list for every VIN.

Honda build sheet by VIN

CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the vehicle was built with — trim, drivetrain, paint, interior and option packages — in plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year and is strongest for recent vehicles.
