Hyundai Genesis Coupe: model years, 2.0T vs 3.8 V6, recalls and used-buying guide

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel-drive sport coupe sold in the US for 2010–2016. It came with a 2.0L turbo four through 2014 or a 3.8L V6, which gained direct injection for 2013 and 348 hp on premium fuel. The 2015–2016 cars are V6 only. It is a Hyundai model, separate from today's Genesis luxury brand.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe engines, horsepower and mpg

Hyundai's 2013–2016 ratings are on premium fuel; the 2.0T made 260 hp and 260 lb-ft on regular. For 2010–2012 cars, Hyundai's 2008 reveal estimated 306 hp and 263 lb-ft for the V6 and 212 hp and 217 lb-ft for the 2.0T, and final ratings could not be retrieved. Hyundai said the 2013 V6 gained 42 hp and 29 lb-ft, and the 2.0T gained 30% in horsepower.

Genesis Coupe 2.0T vs 3.8 V6

From 2013, the 3.8 V6 makes 348 hp and 295 lb-ft against 274 hp and 275 lb-ft for the 2.0T, both on premium fuel. Hyundai quoted a 0–60 time in the low five-second range and a 149-mph electronically limited top speed for the V6.

The 2.0T's advantage is fuel economy and price. EPA rates the 2014 2.0T manual at 19/27/22 mpg; the 2016 3.8 manual is rated 17/24/19 mpg. If you want a 2015 or 2016 car, it will be a V6, because Hyundai dropped the 2.0T after 2014.[6][3][7][4]

Which Genesis Coupe years are which?

The 2013 update is the big dividing line: it brought much more power, 8-speed automatics and new styling.

  • 2010–2012: original styling; port-injected V6 or single-scroll 2.0T; 5-speed (2.0T) or ZF 6-speed (V6) automatic.
  • 2013–2014: new styling, direct-injected 348-hp V6, twin-scroll 274-hp 2.0T, 8-speed automatics. 2014 added rev-matched downshifts on the automatic.
  • 2015: V6 only; new base 3.8 trims; 3.8 Grand Touring dropped.
  • 2016: final year; 6-inch color center display added. Trims: 3.8 Base, R-Spec (manual only) and Ultimate.

Genesis Coupe recalls to check

NHTSA lists these Hyundai campaigns for the Genesis Coupe. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • 24V562 (2010–2013): the ignition lock switch return spring may break, so the car can move if started in gear without the parking brake set.
  • 23V651 (2011–2015): the ABS module may leak internally and short, risking an engine-compartment fire; owners were told to park outside until the repair.
  • 16V722 (2010–2016): the front passenger seat occupant-sensor connector may come loose when the seat moves.
  • 15V756 (2013–2015, manual): bolts securing the differential may loosen.
  • 20V248 (2016): driver's air bag bolts may be under-tightened.
  • 13V113 (2010–2011): the stop lamp switch may malfunction.

Is the Genesis Coupe made by Genesis?

No. The Genesis Coupe was sold and badged as a Hyundai and serviced by Hyundai dealers. It shares its name with, but predates, today's separate Genesis luxury brand; the Genesis models from G70 to GV80 are covered on the Genesis hub. EPA lists the Genesis Coupe under Hyundai for every model year from 2010 to 2016.[9][11][4]

When did Hyundai stop making the Genesis Coupe?

The 2016 model year was the last for the US: EPA lists no Genesis Coupe after 2016. In its final years Hyundai had already narrowed the lineup, dropping the 2.0T for 2015 and offering only three V6 trims for 2016. Hyundai's releases don't give a reason for ending production.[5][3][1]
