Kia Warranty: Powertrain, Basic, EV Battery and Transfer Rules
By CarWhere Research · Updated
A new Kia comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The 10-year powertrain term applies only to the original owner or the buyer of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. What the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covers
Kia's 2025 Warranty and Consumer Information Manual says the Power Train Limited Warranty starts, for original owners, when the 60-month/60,000-mile Basic Limited Warranty ends. It then covers listed components up to 120 months or 100,000 miles from the Date of First Service, whichever comes first. The Date of First Service is the earliest of the day the car is delivered to the first retail buyer, leased, or placed in company use such as demonstrator, rental or fleet.
Kia's warranty page describes the covered parts as essential components of the engine, transmission, axles, differentials and propeller shafts, including internal parts, seals, gaskets and key assemblies. Normal wear and tear and maintenance are not covered. Vehicles placed in any commercial service, such as taxi, route delivery, livery or rental, lose the 10-year term.
- Engine: cylinder block, cylinder head and all internal parts, timing gear, seals and gaskets, valve cover, flywheel, oil pump, water pump and turbocharger
- Transaxle: transmission case and all internal parts, torque converter, drive shafts, universal joints, front hubs, bearings, seals and gaskets
- Axles: axle shafts and CV joints, seals, hub and wheel bearings
- Transmission: case, transfer case, torque converter and all internal parts, seals and gaskets[1][2]
Original owner vs. later owners
The manual defines the original owner as the first retail purchaser or lessee who takes delivery on the Date of First Service. A lessee who buys the car at lease end keeps the 120-month/100,000-mile term. The Power Train Limited Warranty is not transferable. The coverage chart footnote gives second and later owners 60 months/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
The manual also says that every other remaining warranty, apart from the original-owner powertrain term, is fully transferable to later owners. Kia's warranty page says the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty is available to the original purchaser and to the purchaser of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle.[1][2]
Basic warranty and what is not covered
Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers most components and systems against defects in material or workmanship from the Date of First Service. The 2025 manual sets shorter terms for some items: service adjustments for 12 months/12,000 miles, and the original 12V battery, paint and audio/entertainment for 36 months/36,000 miles. The 5-year/100,000-mile Anti-Perforation warranty covers rust-through from the inside out caused by factory defects.
- Normal maintenance such as oil and fluid changes, filters, coolant, alignment and tire rotation
- Wear items such as brake pads and shoes, spark plugs, belts, clutch linings, wiper blades and most bulbs. Kia replaces these on a new car only up to the first service interval or 12 months/12,000 miles
- Damage from misuse, collision, fire, theft, modifications, tampering, the environment, or the wrong fuel, oil or lubricants
- Vehicles with altered odometers or mileage that cannot be determined[1][2]
EV system and battery coverage
Kia's EV System Warranty covers the electric motor, high-voltage battery, electric power control unit (EPCU) and on-board charger (OBC) for 10 years or 100,000 miles from the date of first service. A separate battery capacity coverage applies when capacity drops below 70% of original within 10 years or 100,000 miles. Repairs or replacements bring the battery back to at least 70%.[2]
Roadside Assistance and trip interruption
Roadside Assistance runs for 60 months or 60,000 miles from the date the car goes to the first retail buyer or into use. It covers towing to the nearest Kia dealer for a warranty-related disablement, out-of-gas help, flat-tire help, jump starts and lockout help. The 2025 manual caps roadside services at $75 per occurrence and limits fuel delivery to two times a year. Kia's 24-hour line is 1-800-333-4KIA (4542).
If a warranty-related breakdown happens more than 150 miles from home and repairs take more than 24 hours, Kia's Trip Interruption Policy reimburses meals, lodging or rental car costs, up to $100 a day for three days per incident. Fleet vehicles are excluded. Roadside service is also excluded for any car that has a salvage or other branded title or has been declared a total loss.[2][1]
Kia Certified Pre-Owned coverage
Kia CPO vehicles come with a 10-year/100,000-mile Certified Pre-Owned Limited Powertrain Warranty that starts at the original in-service date and odometer mile 0. The program includes the remainder of the New Vehicle Limited (Basic) Warranty and roadside assistance, plus 1 year/12,000 miles of Platinum Coverage. Each car must pass a 165-point inspection. CPO buyers also get 24-hour unlimited-mile Roadside Assistance with towing, rental and travel-breakdown coverage.[3][2]

How to check what warranty your Kia still has
- Find the Date of First Service: the day the car was first delivered to a retail buyer, leased, or put into company use. All Kia warranty terms count from that date.
- Check whether you are the original owner, a lease buyout, a Kia CPO buyer, or another used buyer. Only the first three keep 10 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
- If you bought a Kia CPO vehicle, keep the CPO documents that show the Certified Pre-Owned Limited Powertrain Warranty.
- Keep maintenance and fuel records. Kia excludes damage from improper maintenance or the wrong fuel, oil or lubricants.
- Give a Kia dealer or Kia's roadside line (1-800-333-4542) your VIN to confirm what coverage remains.[1][3]

Frequently asked questions
Does the Kia 10-year/100,000-mile warranty transfer to a second owner?
No. Kia's 2025 Warranty and Consumer Information Manual says the Power Train Limited Warranty is not transferable. Second and later owners get 60 months/60,000 miles of powertrain coverage from the Date of First Service. The exception is a Kia Certified Pre-Owned purchase, which comes with a 10-year/100,000-mile CPO powertrain warranty.
What does Kia's powertrain warranty cover?
It covers the engine block, cylinder head and internal parts, timing gear, valve cover, flywheel, oil and water pumps and turbocharger. It also covers the transmission or transaxle case and internals, torque converter, drive shafts, axle shafts, CV joints, hub and wheel bearings, and the transfer case.
How long is Kia's basic warranty?
5 years or 60,000 miles from the Date of First Service, whichever comes first. It transfers to later owners for whatever time and mileage remain.
Is the Kia EV battery covered for second owners?
Kia's 2025 manual says every remaining warranty except the original-owner powertrain term is fully transferable. Kia's EV System Warranty and battery capacity coverage run 10 years/100,000 miles from the date of first service, with capacity restored to at least 70%.
Does a Kia CPO vehicle get the 10-year powertrain warranty?
Yes. Kia's CPO program includes a 10-year/100,000-mile Certified Pre-Owned Limited Powertrain Warranty from the original in-service date and 0 miles, plus 1 year/12,000 miles of Platinum Coverage, after a 165-point inspection.
What can void Kia warranty coverage?
The manual excludes damage from misuse, accidents, fire, theft, modifications or tampering, environmental damage, and improper maintenance or the wrong fuel, oil or lubricants. It also excludes cars with altered odometers. Commercial service removes the 10-year powertrain term.
