By CarWhere Research · Updated

CarWhere’s Kia hub collects free research for Kia shoppers and owners: 101 trim levels with dated Kia MSRPs across 11 models, 106 known issues and NHTSA recalls, the engine settlement, the anti-theft software update, the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty and 8 model guides. Frequently asked questions

What does the Kia 10-year/100,000-mile warranty cover?

A new Kia comes with a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The 10-year powertrain term applies only to the original owner or the buyer of a Kia Certified Pre-Owned vehicle. Second and later owners get powertrain coverage for 5 years/60,000 miles from the date of first service.

What was the Kia engine settlement?

Kia's Theta II engine settlement gives owners of eligible 2011–2019 Optima, Sorento and Sportage models a lifetime warranty on the engine short block once the free KSDS software is installed. A later Engine II settlement extends powertrain coverage to 15 years/150,000 miles for Forte, Soul, Optima Hybrid and older 2.4L MPI models.

Which Kia models need the anti-theft software update?

Kia offers a free security software upgrade for turn-key models without an engine immobilizer, mostly base trims of 2011–2022 Forte, Optima, Rio, Soul, Sorento, Sportage and others. The upgrade adds an ignition kill so the car cannot be started with the theft method shown on social media. All Kias built since November 2021 have immobilizers.

Who owns Kia?

Kia is part of Hyundai Motor Group: Hyundai Motor Company acquired Kia Motors in December 1998 and remains its largest shareholder. Kia's US sales began with the Sephia sedan, listed by EPA for 1993–1994, and the Sportage SUV followed for 1995. Kia has built cars in West Point, Georgia, since November 2009 and adopted a new logo in March 2021.

Do Kia and Hyundai share engines?

Yes. Kia and Hyundai are both part of Hyundai Motor Group and share engine families and platforms, so CarWhere’s engine pages (Theta II, Smartstream, 2.5T, Lambda V6, E-GMP) cover both brands’ applications.

How do I check a Kia for recalls?

Enter the 17-character VIN on NHTSA’s recall lookup or ask a Kia dealer to run it. Recall repairs are free. CarWhere’s known-issues pages list recall campaign numbers by model and generation.
