- owner (seller) — because Missouri plates are reassigned to a new vehicle, a plate can point to a different car than the records show, which is exactly why a plate-to-VIN lookup may not resolve. Always confirm the VIN on the vehicle.
Seller removes plates at transfer; the owner can re-register them on another vehicle of equal-or-lesser horsepower/weight.

Missouri license plate lookup — FAQ
Does Missouri require a front license plate?
Yes. Missouri requires two plates — front and rear. Two plates required, front and rear. A plate-to-VIN lookup uses the plate number itself, so it works the same whether you read it off the front or rear plate.
Can I look up a Missouri license plate?
Yes. Enter a Missouri (MO) plate and state above and CarWhere attempts a plate-to-VIN lookup, then decodes the vehicle's year, make, model, body style and engine. Coverage varies — newly issued, transferred, temporary, or specialty MO plates may not resolve, in which case you can continue by entering the VIN.
Does a Missouri plate lookup show the owner?
No. Owner identity tied to a Missouri plate is protected by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) and Missouri law. CarWhere never provides owner names, addresses, phone numbers, or personal registration details — only the factory vehicle identity.
Why did my Missouri plate lookup fail?
Plate-to-VIN coverage is not complete for every MO plate. Brand-new registrations, plates recently transferred to another vehicle, temporary/paper plates, dealer plates, and personalized/specialty plates are the most common misses. A failed lookup doesn't mean the vehicle's report is unavailable — enter the 17-character VIN to continue.
Where is the VIN on a Missouri vehicle?
On the Missouri registration card and the title certificate, the insurance card, the metal plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside), and the driver's door-jamb label. It is 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O, or Q.
