Pennsylvania license plate lookup — FAQ
Does Pennsylvania require a front license plate?
No. Pennsylvania issues a single rear plate only — there is no front plate. Rear plate only; no front required since 1952. A plate-to-VIN lookup reads the plate number, so one plate is all you need.
Can I look up a Pennsylvania license plate?
Yes. Enter a Pennsylvania (PA) plate and state above and CarWhere attempts a plate-to-VIN lookup, then decodes the vehicle's year, make, model, body style and engine. Coverage varies — newly issued, transferred, temporary, or specialty PA plates may not resolve, in which case you can continue by entering the VIN.
Does a Pennsylvania plate lookup show the owner?
No. Owner identity tied to a Pennsylvania plate is protected by the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) and Pennsylvania law. CarWhere never provides owner names, addresses, phone numbers, or personal registration details — only the factory vehicle identity.
Why did my Pennsylvania plate lookup fail?
Plate-to-VIN coverage is not complete for every PA plate. Brand-new registrations, plates recently transferred to another vehicle, temporary/paper plates, dealer plates, and personalized/specialty plates are the most common misses. A failed lookup doesn't mean the vehicle's report is unavailable — enter the 17-character VIN to continue.
Where is the VIN on a Pennsylvania vehicle?
On the Pennsylvania registration card and the title certificate, the insurance card, the metal plate at the base of the windshield on the driver's side (visible from outside), and the driver's door-jamb label. It is 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O, or Q.
