Nissan Rogue engines, horsepower and mpg
EPA has not yet posted 2027 gas Rogue ratings; the figures shown are EPA's 2026 ratings. Nissan quotes 28/33/30 mpg (S/SV FWD) for the 2027 car after its CVT retune. The Hybrid has no EPA rating yet: Nissan's internal estimate is 41/36/38 mpg for the SR and 41/35/37 for SV and Platinum. EPA rates the Plug-in Hybrid at 64 MPGe with 38 miles of electric range and 420 miles total.

- The Hybrid costs $5,800 more than a gas Rogue S but includes AWD, which is a $1,400 option on the gas car.
- Only the Plug-in Hybrid can drive meaningful distances on electricity alone.
What the Rogue's VC-Turbo engine does
Since 2022 every gas Rogue uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder Variable Compression Turbo. A multi-link mechanism changes the engine's compression ratio on the move, so it can run high compression for efficiency and lower compression for boost. Nissan rates it at 201 hp and 225 lb-ft, up from 181 hp and 181 lb-ft for the 2021 car's 2.5L four-cylinder.
Nissan first used variable compression on a 2.0L four-cylinder in the 2019 Altima and Infiniti QX50. The Rogue's three-cylinder version added higher-pressure fuel injection. For 2027 Nissan retuned the Rogue's CVT to go with it.[12][11][1]
Rogue Hybrid: how e-POWER differs from a normal hybrid
The 2027 Rogue Hybrid is the first e-POWER Nissan in the US. Its 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder (148 hp) never drives the wheels: it acts only as a generator, charging a 1.67 kWh battery and shutting off when the battery has enough charge. A 202-hp front motor and a 134-hp rear motor do all the driving, for 225 hp combined and standard all-wheel drive.
It does not plug in. Nissan estimates up to 41 mpg city and 38 mpg combined from internal testing, pending EPA figures. It is built at Nissan Motor Kyushu in Japan and is rated to tow 1,500 lb, the same as the gas Rogue.
Rogue Plug-in Hybrid
Nissan's first US plug-in hybrid reached dealers in February 2026 in SL ($45,990) and Platinum ($49,990) grades, both with Intelligent AWD. Nissan rates total output at 248 hp and 322 lb-ft, enough to make it quicker than the gas Rogue.
EPA estimates 38 miles of all-electric driving on a full charge, 420 miles of total range and 64 MPGe combined. Unlike the e-POWER Hybrid, it needs to be plugged in to use its electric range.[3]

Nissan Rogue generations by year
| Generation | US model years | Engines | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third generation | 2021–present | 2.5L 4-cylinder (181 hp, 181 lb-ft, 2021); 1.5L VC-Turbo 3-cylinder (201 hp, 225 lb-ft, 2022–); e-POWER Rogue Hybrid (225 hp, 2027–); Rogue Plug-in Hybrid (248 hp, 2026–) | Launched at $25,650 in October 2020 with S, SV, SL and a new Platinum grade, each with FWD or AWD. The VC-Turbo replaced the 2.5L for 2022 with 11% more horsepower and 24% more torque. Rock Creek arrived for 2025; the 2026.5 update dropped SL and added Dark Armor.[10][11][12][13][2][3] |
| Second generation | 2014–2020 | 2.5L 4-cylinder (170 hp, 175 lb-ft) with Xtronic CVT; EPA also lists a 2.0L Rogue Hybrid for 2017–2019 | Totally redesigned for 2014 and moved to production in Smyrna, Tennessee, on the CMF platform shared with Renault. An optional 50/50 third-row seat was offered. The smaller Rogue Sport sold alongside it from 2017 (EPA lists it through 2022).[14][15][16] |
| First generation | 2008–2013 (Rogue Select 2014–2015) | 2.5L 4-cylinder QR25DE (170 hp, 175 lb-ft) with Xtronic CVT | Went on sale in September 2007 as a 2008 model, built in Kyushu, Japan, with Nissan expecting a starting price around $20,000. When the redesign arrived, Nissan kept the old car on sale as the Rogue Select from January 2014; EPA lists it for 2014 and 2015.[17][15][16] |
Nissan Rogue problems and recalls
The biggest documented Rogue problems are engine recalls on the 1.5-liter VC-Turbo (2021–2025), wiring connectors that corrode from footwell water and salt on 2008–2016 models, and a jackknife-key recall covering 2014–2020. CVT powertrain coverage on 2014–2018 Rogues was extended to 84 months or 84,000 miles under a class settlement.
