P0421: Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

P0421 means the warm-up (light-off) catalytic converter on Bank 1, the side with cylinder 1, is not storing and converting exhaust pollutants as efficiently as required.

Severity: Moderate — diagnose within days
Can I drive with P0421? Usually yes if the engine runs smoothly and the light is steady. If there are misfires, a flashing check engine light, or noticeable power loss, reduce driving and have it checked promptly.

How P0421 sets

On engines with a small warm-up converter close to the exhaust manifold, the powertrain control module (PCM) compares oxygen sensor signals before and after that converter. If the downstream signal switches too much like the upstream signal, indicating low oxygen storage, the PCM sets P0421. Which converter is tested and how varies by manufacturer.

Common causes of P0421

Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.

  1. Degraded or damaged warm-up catalytic converter
  2. Prior misfires, oil burning, or coolant contamination damaging the converter
  3. Exhaust leak near the oxygen sensors
  4. Faulty downstream oxygen sensor
  5. Engine running rich or lean due to fuel control problems

P0421 symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Usually no drivability symptoms
  • Sulfur smell from the exhaust
  • Reduced power if the converter is restricted

How P0421 is diagnosed

  1. Scan for related codes, especially misfire, fuel trim, and oxygen sensor codes, and repair those first
  2. Inspect for exhaust leaks around the manifold and sensors
  3. Compare upstream and downstream oxygen sensor waveforms at a warm steady cruise
  4. Test downstream oxygen sensor response
  5. Check for oil consumption or coolant loss that could contaminate the converter
  6. Check for manufacturer software updates

Typical fixes for P0421

  • Correct any underlying misfire, oil burning, coolant leak, or rich condition
  • Repair exhaust leaks
  • Replace a faulty oxygen sensor
  • Replace the warm-up catalytic converter (often integrated with the exhaust manifold)

Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

Manufacturer notes

Definitions can vary by manufacturer; check factory service information. Some vehicles set P0420 rather than P0421 for the same component.

P0421 FAQ

What does code P0421 mean?

P0421 means the warm-up (light-off) catalytic converter on Bank 1, the side with cylinder 1, is not storing and converting exhaust pollutants as efficiently as required. The standard definition is "Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)."

Can I drive with a P0421 code?

Usually yes if the engine runs smoothly and the light is steady. If there are misfires, a flashing check engine light, or noticeable power loss, reduce driving and have it checked promptly.

What is a warm-up catalyst?

It is a small catalytic converter placed close to the engine so it heats up quickly after a cold start, reducing emissions before the main converter reaches operating temperature.

Is P0421 more serious than P0420?

Not inherently. Both indicate reduced converter efficiency on Bank 1, and the diagnostic approach is very similar.
