P0441: Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow

P0441 means the engine computer detected that fuel vapor purge flow from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister into the engine is not what it expected.

Severity: Low — fix soon
Can I drive with P0441? Yes, in most cases. If the purge valve is stuck open you may get a rough idle or hard starting right after refueling, so have it looked at soon.

Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research

How P0441 sets

The powertrain control module (PCM) opens the purge valve at certain times and looks for a change, such as a shift in fuel trim, idle speed, or fuel tank pressure. If purging produces no change, or flow occurs when the valve is supposed to be closed, the PCM sets P0441. Monitoring strategies are manufacturer-specific.

Common causes of P0441

Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.

  1. Faulty purge valve or solenoid, stuck open or closed
  2. Disconnected, cracked, or blocked purge hoses
  3. Restricted or saturated charcoal canister
  4. Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
  5. Wiring problems in the purge valve circuit
  6. Blocked vent path preventing flow

P0441 symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or stalling if the purge valve is stuck open
  • Hard starting after refueling
  • Often no symptoms

How P0441 is diagnosed

  1. Scan for other EVAP codes and review freeze frame data
  2. Inspect purge lines between the canister, purge valve, and intake
  3. With engine off, check whether the purge valve holds vacuum when not energized
  4. Command the purge valve with a scan tool and confirm it clicks and flows
  5. Check fuel tank pressure sensor readings during purge
  6. Inspect the canister for fuel saturation or debris

Typical fixes for P0441

  • Replace the purge valve or solenoid
  • Repair or replace purge hoses
  • Replace a saturated or damaged canister
  • Repair wiring or replace the tank pressure sensor

Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

Manufacturer notes

Definitions can vary by manufacturer; check factory service information. Commonly reported on older GM vehicles with purge solenoid failures.

P0441 FAQ

What does code P0441 mean?

P0441 means the engine computer detected that fuel vapor purge flow from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister into the engine is not what it expected. The standard definition is "Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow."

Can I drive with a P0441 code?

Yes, in most cases. If the purge valve is stuck open you may get a rough idle or hard starting right after refueling, so have it looked at soon.

Can overfilling the gas tank cause P0441?

Repeatedly topping off after the pump clicks off can force liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, which can damage it and the purge valve over time.

Is P0441 the same as P0496?

They are related. P0496 specifically reports high purge flow, while P0441 is a broader incorrect-flow code used by many manufacturers.
