P0641: Sensor Reference Voltage "A" Circuit/Open
P0641 means the engine computer detected that its sensor reference voltage circuit "A", the regulated supply that powers several sensors, is out of range, shorted or open.
Standard title per SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6 · Updated 2026-11-07 · By CarWhere Research
How P0641 sets
The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies a regulated reference voltage, typically 5 volts, to a group of sensors and monitors that supply internally. If the voltage is pulled too low by a short, rises too high, or the circuit is open, the PCM sets P0641. Which sensors share reference "A" is manufacturer-specific.
Common causes of P0641
Roughly most likely first; the actual cause depends on the vehicle and needs testing to confirm.
- A shorted sensor on the shared reference circuit
- Reference wire chafed and shorted to ground or another circuit
- Damaged or corroded connector on a sensor sharing the circuit
- Water intrusion in a harness or connector
- Internal PCM reference regulator failure
P0641 symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced power or limp mode
- Multiple sensor codes stored at the same time
- Erratic or missing gauge readings on some vehicles
- Stalling or no-start in some cases
How P0641 is diagnosed
- Record freeze frame data and list every sensor code stored with P0641
- Use factory wiring diagrams to identify every sensor sharing reference "A"
- Measure reference voltage at a sensor connector with the key on
- Unplug sensors on the circuit one at a time and watch whether the reference voltage recovers
- Inspect the harness for chafing near exhaust, brackets and moving parts
- If the reference stays low with all sensors and harness isolated, suspect the PCM
Typical fixes for P0641
- Replace the sensor that is shorting the reference circuit
- Repair chafed or shorted reference wiring
- Clean or replace damaged connectors
- Replace and program the PCM if its internal regulator has failed
Replace parts only after testing confirms the cause — a code names the circuit or condition that failed a check, not necessarily the faulty part. We don’t publish per-repair prices; for what households actually spend on upkeep, see car repair costs.

P0641 FAQ
What does code P0641 mean?
P0641 means the engine computer detected that its sensor reference voltage circuit "A", the regulated supply that powers several sensors, is out of range, shorted or open. The standard definition is "Sensor Reference Voltage "A" Circuit/Open."
Can I drive with a P0641 code?
Avoid driving except to get it repaired. Losing this reference can disable several sensors at once, often including throttle or pedal sensors, which can trigger reduced power or stalling.
Why did one code turn on so many others?
Several sensors share the same reference supply. When it is shorted or open, all of them read incorrectly at once, so a cluster of sensor codes follows the reference fault.
How do I find which sensor is the problem?
With the key on and voltage monitored, unplugging the sensors on the circuit one at a time usually reveals the culprit when the reference voltage jumps back to normal.
