12-Valve Cummins: years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 12-valve Cummins is the 5.9-liter 6BT inline-six diesel in 1989 to early-1998 Dodge Ram pickups. It made 160 hp and 400 lb-ft with the Bosch VE rotary pump through 1993, then up to 215 hp and 440 lb-ft with the Bosch P7100 inline pump and a manual transmission by 1996–1998.

Dodge put the Cummins 5.9-liter six into its Ram 250 and 350 for 1989, and the 12-valve engine (two valves per cylinder, solid lifters) stayed until the 24-valve arrived midway through 1998. It displaces 359 cubic inches from a 4.02-inch bore and 4.72-inch stroke and uses direct injection with a single Holset turbo. First-generation trucks (1989–1993) used a Bosch VE rotary pump and were rated at 160 hp and 400 lb-ft.

The second-generation Ram for 1994 switched to the six-plunger Bosch P7100 inline pump, added a catalytic converter and split ratings by transmission: manual trucks with the NV4500 got more power, reaching 215 hp and 440 lb-ft for 1996–1998, while 47RE automatics were rated at 180 hp and 420 lb-ft. NHTSA lists no engine-specific recall; the one item every buyer should ask about is the killer dowel pin.

1989–1993 12-valve 5.9 (Bosch VE pump) problems and what to check

Killer dowel pin (KDP) in the timing gear housing (1989–1993)

Major repair

A small steel dowel that locates the timing gear housing can work loose and fall into the gear train. If it does, it can damage the camshaft, crankshaft and injection pump gears. The usual preventive fix is to remove the front cover and tab or retain the pin in place; aftermarket kits exist for the job.[1][2]

Symptoms

  • Usually none before it lets go
  • Ticking or clatter from the front of the engine
  • Sudden loss of timing and engine damage if the pin enters the gears

Check before buying

  • Ask whether the KDP has been tabbed or fixed and get a receipt
  • Budget the front-cover job if there is no record
  • Listen for front-of-engine noise at idle

Early camshaft weak spot (1989–1993)

Minor

The 1989–1993 camshaft had a weak area between the front main journal and the first cam lobe. Cummins strengthened this area for the 1994 engine and added hardened tappet faces.[2]

Symptoms

  • Valvetrain noise
  • Misfire-like roughness if a lobe is damaged

Check before buying

  • Ask whether the camshaft or tappets have been replaced
  • Listen for valvetrain tick at idle

Frequently asked questions

What years is the 12-valve Cummins?

Dodge Ram pickups from 1989 through early model-year 1998. The 24-valve 5.9 replaced it midway through 1998.

How much horsepower does a 12-valve Cummins have?

160 hp and 400 lb-ft for 1989–1993. With the P7100 pump, 1994–1995 manual trucks made 175 hp and 1996–1998 manual trucks made 215 hp and 440 lb-ft; automatics were rated at 160–180 hp.

What is the difference between the VE and P7100 12-valve?

1989–1993 engines use the Bosch VE rotary pump. 1994–1998 engines use the Bosch P7100 inline pump with six plungers, which delivers more fuel and is why manual-transmission ratings rose.

What is the killer dowel pin?

A locating pin for the timing gear housing that can back out and drop into the gears on 1989–2002 Cummins engines. The common fix is to tab or retain it during a front-cover job.

Did the 12-valve Cummins have any recalls?

NHTSA lists no engine-specific recall for the 1998 Dodge Ram 2500; the only engine-related entry is an aftermarket fuel-kit recall.
