5.9 Cummins engines by year

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The 5.9 Cummins powered Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickups from 1989 to early 2007 in two families: the 12-valve (1989–1998, 160–215 hp) and the 24-valve ISB (1998.5–2007), which used the VP44 pump through 2002 and common rail from 2003, reaching 325 hp and 610 lb-ft.

Every 5.9 Cummins in a Dodge Ram shares the 359-cubic-inch displacement and 4.02 × 4.72-inch bore and stroke, but the fuel system defines each era. The 1989–1993 12-valve used a Bosch VE rotary pump, the 1994–1998 12-valve the P7100 inline pump, the 1998.5–2002 24-valve the electronic VP44, and the 2003–2007 engine high-pressure common rail with a CP3. Output rose from 160 hp and 400 lb-ft to 325 hp and 610 lb-ft.

The first things to check differ by era: the killer dowel pin on every 1989–2002 engine, the cracked '53' block on 1998.5–2001 24-valves, and VP44 pump health on 1998.5–2002 trucks. The 6.7 Cummins replaced the 5.9 during the 2007 model year.

Frequently asked questions

What years is the 5.9 Cummins?

Dodge Ram pickups from 1989 to early 2007: 12-valve from 1989 to early 1998 and 24-valve from mid-1998 to 2007.

How can I tell a 12-valve from a 24-valve?

Model year is the quickest clue: 1989 through early-1998 trucks are 12-valve, later ones 24-valve. A 12-valve has a mechanical pump (VE or P7100); a 24-valve has the VP44 or common rail.

Which 5.9 Cummins is the most powerful?

The 2005–2007 common-rail 5.9, rated at 325 hp and 610 lb-ft.

What is the killer dowel pin?

A timing-housing locating pin on 1989–2002 Cummins engines that can back out and damage the gear train. Tabbing it in place during a front-cover job is the usual fix.

Which 5.9 Cummins years have the 53 block?

Some 1998.5–2001 24-valve engines. The block has a 53 cast into its side and can crack along the water jacket.
