Not book-value theory — live market medians across 182 models. On average, a 5-year-old example lists 51.2% below what the same model costs new today. The spread is the story: Porsche 911 gives up just 8.9% in five years, while INFINITI QX80 sheds 73.2%.

Methodology

For each model currently sold new in the US, we take the median asking price of live used listings for each model year (minimum 40 listings per point; median odometer recorded alongside) and compare it with the median price of the same model new today (minimum 50 listings). "−X%" = how far below today's new price that model-year lists. This measures the real new-vs-used decision a buyer faces rather than historical loss from original MSRP; in inflationary periods it will read slightly kinder than classic MSRP depreciation. Discontinued models are excluded (no live new baseline). Data via licensed vehicle-data providers, aggregated 2026-10-25; statistics only, no listing data reproduced. Full table as CSV.

How much does a car depreciate per year?

Measured against today's new price for the same model, the live-listing averages across 182 models run: 1 yr old = 26.9% below new, 2 yr old = 32.8% below new, 3 yr old = 38.5% below new, 4 yr old = 45.7% below new, 5 yr old = 51.2% below new, 6 yr old = 56.7% below new, 7 yr old = 60.9% below new, 8 yr old = 64.9% below new. The steepest part of the curve is the first 2-3 years — which is why lightly-used examples are usually the value play.

Which cars hold their value best?

At 5 years old, the smallest used-vs-new gaps in live listings: Porsche 911 (-8.9%), Honda Civic Hatchback (-24.2%), Ford Mustang (-29.1%), Honda Civic (-31.5%), Toyota Tacoma (-31.7%). Trucks and off-road SUVs dominate — strong demand and long production runs keep used asking prices close to new.

Which cars depreciate the fastest?

The largest 5-year gaps: INFINITI QX80 (-73.2%), Land Rover Range Rover (-72.4%), BMW X7 (-71.7%), Mercedes-Benz S-Class (-71.1%), Land Rover Range Rover Sport (-69.5%). Luxury sedans and first-wave EVs typically fall hardest — high original prices, expensive upkeep, and fast-moving technology.

Is this the same as classic depreciation from MSRP?

Close but not identical — and arguably more useful. Classic depreciation compares a used price to what that car sold for years ago. This study compares the used price to what the SAME model costs new today, which is the actual decision a buyer faces: new vs 3-year-old vs 5-year-old. Mileage context is included (median odometer per model-year) so the gaps aren't driven by worn-out outliers.

Where does this data come from?

Median asking prices from live US dealer listings via licensed vehicle-data providers, aggregated per model-year (minimum 40 listings per data point, 2026-10-25). Only models currently sold new are included, so every comparison has a live new-price baseline. Statistics may be republished with attribution to CarWhere (carwhere.com).
