RV & Camper VIN Lookup
RVs and travel trailers carry standard 17-character VINs in the federal NHTSA database — with one quirk worth knowing: a motorhome usually carries its chassis maker's VIN (Ford, Mercedes-Benz, or Freightliner), which is where the engine, transmission, and drivetrain recalls live. FAQ
Where is the VIN on an RV or travel trailer?
On a motorhome: the driver-area dash or door pillar, same as a truck — and note it is usually the CHASSIS manufacturer's VIN (Ford, Mercedes-Benz, or Freightliner). On a travel trailer or fifth wheel: the federal certification label on the front-left exterior or the frame tongue near the hitch.
Why does my motorhome VIN decode as a Ford or Mercedes?
Because most motorhomes are built on another manufacturer's chassis — the VIN belongs to the Ford E-Series/Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, or Freightliner platform underneath, while the coach builder (Thor, Winnebago, etc.) adds a separate serial number. That chassis VIN is the important one: it carries the engine, transmission, and the safety-critical drivetrain recalls.
Do RVs have window stickers?
No — the 1958 Monroney Act covers passenger automobiles only, so motorhomes and travel trailers are exempt and no federal window sticker exists. Dealers price from the manufacturer's own spec sheet. The $9.99 CarWhere Full VIN Report is the closest equivalent for the chassis: full decode, open recalls, owner complaints, and service bulletins.
Can I check RV recalls by VIN?
Yes — and check twice. Both the chassis maker (Ford/Mercedes/Freightliner) and the coach builder (Thor, Winnebago, Forest River, Jayco, Airstream) file separate NHTSA recall campaigns. RV recalls are common and repairs are free at authorized service centers; decode the chassis VIN here, then check the coach builder's recalls for the coach serial.
