Subaru 2.5L EJ25 BOXER (non-turbo and turbo): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The EJ25 is Subaru's earlier 2.5-liter BOXER four. Non-turbo versions powered Legacy, Outback, Forester and Impreza models from 1996 until the FB25 took over (2011–2013). Turbo EJ25s ran in the Forester XT, Legacy GT, Outback XT, WRX and WRX STI; the last, the STI, ended with the 2021 model at 310 hp.

Subaru uses the EJ25 code itself in its own STI S209 materials and in a Fuji Heavy Industries release recording Ward's 10 Best Engines awards for the EJ25 turbo in 2004 and 2010. EPA listings show a 2.5L Subaru four from the 1996 Legacy and the 1998 Impreza, and turbocharged 2.5L versions from the 2004 Forester and Impreza STI, the 2005 Legacy and Outback, and the 2006 Impreza WRX.

The non-turbo engine was a single-overhead-cam design; Subaru's 2010 Legacy release rates it at 170 hp and 170 lb-ft. Subaru replaced it with the DOHC, chain-driven FB25 in the 2011 Forester and the 2013 Legacy and Outback, and the 2012 Impreza moved to a 2.0L. Turbo versions ranged from 224 hp (2011 Forester 2.5XT) to 305–310 hp in the WRX STI, plus 341 hp in the limited 2019 STI S209.

Head gaskets: CarWhere checked the NHTSA recall dataset for every Subaru campaign, and none covers head gaskets on any Subaru engine. The Subaru releases and court records CarWhere reviewed for this page don't address EJ25 head gaskets either, so this page makes no claim about failure rates. A pre-purchase inspection and the car's service history remain the best evidence for a specific car.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Subaru EJ25 have a head gasket recall?

No. CarWhere checked every Subaru campaign in the NHTSA recall dataset and none covers head gaskets on any engine. Recalls tied to EJ25-era turbo cars cover other parts, such as the 2008 campaign 08V460 for the turbocharger oil supply pipe.

Which Subarus have the EJ25 engine?

Non-turbo versions were in the Legacy and Outback through 2012, the Forester through 2010 and the Impreza through 2011. Turbo versions were in the Forester XT (2004–2013), Legacy GT (2005–2012), Outback XT (2005–2009), Impreza WRX (2006–2014) and WRX STI (2004–2021).

How much horsepower does the EJ25 make?

Subaru rated the last non-turbo version at 170 hp and 170 lb-ft. Turbo versions ranged from 224 hp in the 2011 Forester 2.5XT to 265 hp in the WRX and Legacy GT, 305–310 hp in the WRX STI and 341 hp in the 2019 STI S209.

What replaced the EJ25?

The FB25, a DOHC 2.5L with chain-driven camshafts, replaced the non-turbo EJ25 in the 2011 Forester and the 2013 Legacy and Outback. Turbo duty moved to the FA20 2.0L turbo (2014 Forester XT, 2015 WRX) and later the FA24 2.4L turbo.

Is the EJ25 timing belt or chain?

Subaru's 2011 Forester material says the earlier 2.5L used belt-driven camshafts, and that the new FB25 moved to chain drive to cut servicing costs.
