Subaru 2.4L FA24 BOXER (turbo and BRZ naturally aspirated): years, specs & known problems

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The FA24 is Subaru's 2,387 cc, 2.4-liter direct-injection turbo BOXER four. Subaru rates it at 260 hp and 277 lb-ft in the Ascent (2019–present), Outback XT (2020–present) and Legacy XT (2020–2025), and 271 hp and 258 lb-ft in the 2022-on WRX. The 2022-on BRZ uses a 228-hp naturally aspirated 2.4L.

The FA24 turbo debuted in the 2019 Ascent. Subaru Corporation lists it as a DOHC direct-injection turbo, 2,387 cc from a 94 × 86 mm bore and stroke, and Subaru gives a 10.6:1 compression ratio, a twin-scroll turbo, an intercooler and dual AVCS. In the Ascent, Outback and Legacy it is paired with a high-torque Lineartronic CVT and runs on 87 octane. The WRX tune makes 271 hp, with a 6-speed manual or the Subaru Performance Transmission.

The second-generation BRZ uses a naturally aspirated 2.4L with the same 94 × 86 mm bore and stroke, 12.5:1 compression and Toyota D-4S direct plus port injection, rated 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. Subaru's BRZ releases don't print an engine code. No Subaru hybrid uses the 2.4L; the hybrids use a 2.5L. Recall 19V856 (PCV valve) covered 2019 Ascents.
