Subaru revealed its first production hybrid, the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid, at the New York auto show in March 2013. It added a 13.4-hp electric motor, built into the CVT, and a small 0.6-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery to the XV Crosstrek’s 2.0-liter BOXER, for 160 hp combined. Pricing started at $25,995. EPA lists the model through 2016.

The 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid was Subaru’s first plug-in hybrid. It combined a 2.0-liter direct-injection BOXER with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery under the cargo floor, priced at $34,995. EPA rated it at 17 miles of electric range, 90 MPGe and 480 miles of total range. Subaru priced it through the 2023 model year, when it cost $36,845.

Subaru’s next-generation series-parallel hybrid arrived in the 2025 Forester Hybrid, the first US Forester Hybrid, and then in the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid. Both pair a newly developed Atkinson/Miller-cycle 2.5-liter BOXER with a motor generator, a traction motor and a sealed lithium-ion battery, for 194 hp combined. • The XV Crosstrek Hybrid’s motor made 13.4 hp and 47.9 lb-ft, raising system output to 160 hp and 163 lb-ft versus 148 hp and 145 lb-ft for the gasoline model. The hybrid system weighed 209 lb, and the car about 300 lb more than the gas version.
• The 2019 plug-in used Subaru StarDrive Technology, which Subaru said integrated Toyota Hybrid System technology. It could run up to 65 mph on electricity and was rated to tow 1,000 lb.
• The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid has an EPA-estimated range of 630 miles on a tank, per Subaru’s 2027 pricing release; Subaru quoted up to 581 miles for the 2025 Forester Hybrid.
• Subaru says the next-generation hybrid keeps Symmetrical AWD mechanically coupled to the front and rear wheels, plus X-MODE and 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

What to check before you buy one

• Identify which hybrid you are looking at: the 2014–2016 XV Crosstrek Hybrid and 2026-on Crosstrek Hybrid do not plug in, while the 2019–2023 Crosstrek Hybrid is a plug-in with a charge port.
• On a used plug-in, check that the charging cable comes with the car and that the electric range shown on a full charge is reasonable for its age.
• Confirm the model year with a VIN decode; the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid uses the 2.5-liter system, not the earlier 2.0-liter hybrids.
• Compare against the gasoline version: for 2027 the Crosstrek Sport trim is offered only as a hybrid.
