Subaru Symmetrical AWD: how it works, when it became standard and the exceptions
By CarWhere Research · Updated
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is Subaru’s name for a longitudinally mounted BOXER engine paired with a drivetrain laid out symmetrically in line behind it. Subaru of America made it standard across all model lines in 1996. The exceptions are the rear-wheel-drive BRZ sports car and the front-drive 2026 Uncharted Premium FWD.
Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive history
Subaru says the defining feature of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a symmetrically laid-out drivetrain paired with a longitudinally mounted BOXER engine positioned in line with it. Because the transmission sits directly behind the engine and inside the wheelbase, torque runs in a nearly straight line to the rear differential, and the layout gives good left-right balance and a low center of gravity.
The system grew out of Subaru’s early four-wheel-drive cars. The 1972 Leone 4WD Estate Van was Japan’s first mass-produced all-wheel-drive passenger vehicle, and in 1975 US buyers got On-Demand 4WD on the DL/GL wagon, switched on with a lever next to the shifter. A Full-Time 4WD system followed on most models from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, and in 1996 Subaru of America made Symmetrical AWD standard across all model lines.
Subaru says every version of the system sends torque to all four wheels all the time, rather than waiting for wheel slip. By 2021 all-wheel-drive models made up 98 percent of Subaru’s global sales, and cumulative AWD production passed 20 million in June of that year.[1],[2]

| Second-generation system | Full-Time 4WD, most models, late 1980s to early 1990s |
| Standard across US model lines | 1996 |
| Share of global sales | 98% all-wheel drive (2021) |

| Front-wheel-drive exception | Uncharted Premium FWD (2026 and 2027 model years) |
Generations and key variants
| Version | Used with | How it distributes torque |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous AWD | Manual transmissions: 2014 Impreza 2.0i and XV Crosstrek (5-speed); Legacy, Outback and Forester (6-speed); 2015 WRX (6-speed) | Viscous-coupling locking center differential splits torque 50:50; slip sends up to 100% to the other axle |
| Active Torque Split | All 2014 models and the 2015 WRX with the Lineartronic CVT | Electronically managed transfer clutch varies the split with acceleration, braking and cornering; up to 100% to either axle |
| Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) | Six-cylinder Legacy and Outback, and the Tribeca | Planetary center differential with a hydraulic transfer clutch; 45:55 front-to-rear under most conditions |
| Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) | WRX STI only | Planetary center differential with mechanical and electronic limited-slip; 41:59 split, three automatic modes and six manual settings |
Engine and drivetrain facts
- Subaru mounts its BOXER engine longitudinally with the transmission directly behind it, which it says avoids the extra transfer gearing a transverse-engine AWD system needs.
- The 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid used the same Active Torque Split version of Symmetrical AWD as the gasoline model.
- In the 2025 Forester Hybrid and 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid, Subaru says the AWD system is mechanically coupled to the front and rear wheels.
- The 2023 Solterra electric SUV uses front and rear electric motors with 215 hp combined, which Subaru also brands Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.
- The 2026 Outback’s revised system offers faster center-differential lockup off-road and uses steering-angle data for stability when turning in.
What changed over the years
- 1972Leone 4WD Estate Van: Japan’s first mass-produced AWD passenger vehicle.
- 1975On-Demand 4WD arrives in the US on the DL/GL wagon.
- Late 1980s–early 1990sFull-Time 4WD is offered on most models.
- 1996Symmetrical AWD becomes standard across all US model lines.
- 2012The rear-wheel-drive BRZ makes its US debut.
- 2014Subaru lists four versions of the system: Continuous, Active Torque Split, VTD and DCCD.
- June 2021Cumulative AWD production passes 20 million.
- 2022The 2023 Solterra brings Symmetrical AWD to an all-electric Subaru with front and rear motors.
- December 2025Subaru prices the 2026 Uncharted, whose entry Premium FWD trim is front-wheel drive only.
What to check before you buy one
- On a 2026 or later Uncharted, confirm the trim: the Premium FWD is front-wheel drive only, while the Sport and GT have Symmetrical AWD.
- Every BRZ is rear-wheel drive, so it does not share the AWD traits of other Subarus.
- For 2014–2015 models, the AWD version depends on transmission and engine: manuals use Continuous AWD, CVTs use Active Torque Split and six-cylinder cars use VTD.
- On a WRX STI, test the DCCD controls on the console in both automatic and manual modes.
- Because the system drives all four wheels all the time, ask for tire records and check that all four tires match.

How to verify a Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive's factory options
A Subaru’s engine, transmission and drive type are fixed at the factory. CarWhere decodes the 17-character VIN and, where licensed factory build data exists, lists the equipment the car was built with. It does not promise a complete option list for every VIN.
Subaru build sheet by VIN
CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the vehicle was built with — trim, drivetrain, paint, interior and option packages — in plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year and is strongest for recent vehicles.

Frequently asked questions
What is Subaru Symmetrical AWD?
Subaru’s all-wheel-drive layout: a longitudinally mounted BOXER engine with the transmission and drivetrain arranged symmetrically in line behind it. Subaru says the low center of gravity and balanced weight improve stability and traction.
When did Subaru make AWD standard?
In 1996, when Subaru of America decided to make Symmetrical AWD standard across all its model lines.
Which Subarus are not all-wheel drive?
The BRZ sports car is rear-wheel drive, and the entry 2026–2027 Uncharted Premium FWD is front-wheel drive. Uncharted Sport and GT models have Symmetrical AWD.
Is Subaru AWD full-time?
Yes. Subaru says all versions of Symmetrical AWD send torque to all four wheels all the time, unlike part-time systems that move torque only after the main drive wheels slip.
What are the different types of Subaru AWD?
For its 2014–2015 models Subaru listed four: Continuous AWD (manuals), Active Torque Split (CVT models), Variable Torque Distribution (six-cylinder models and the Tribeca) and DCCD (WRX STI).
How many all-wheel-drive Subarus have been built?
More than 20 million. Subaru reached that cumulative AWD production milestone in June 2021.
