Utah Bill of Sale for a Car

A bill of sale may be required for a private car sale in Utah, depending on the situation. Utah does not mandate a bill of sale when the assigned title documents a private sale, but the DMV says it is important to write one up (proof of transfer for the seller, purchase-price documentation for the buyer), bases sales/use tax on the net purchase price shown on a signed bill of sale, and highly recommends one accompany a duplicate-title application.

What a Utah car bill of sale must include

  • Vehicle year, make, model, body type
  • Vehicle/hull identification number (VIN/HIN)
  • License plate number and whether the plate is included in the sale
  • Seller name and address
  • Sale price
  • Date of sale
  • Odometer reading (required, no tenths) with mileage certification (actual / exceeds mechanical limits / not actual)
  • Seller signature and date (transfer and odometer/sales certification)
  • Buyer name and address
  • Buyer signature and date (acknowledges as-is, where-is sale)
  • In ink (handwritten or typed), not pencil; keep a copy and report the sale at mvp.tax.utah.gov

The seller must give the buyer a signed odometer disclosure at transfer (TC-843 includes a required odometer section with actual/exceeds-limits/not-actual certification, or separate form TC-891), with exemptions for vehicles with GVWR of 16,000 pounds or more and vehicles 20 years old or older; both parties must keep a copy for at least four years.

Before you sign: run the VIN

Once you sign, the car — and its problems — are yours. The $9.99 Full VIN Report shows open recalls for that VIN, plus complaints and service bulletins for the model, and the original window sticker where available, in about a minute. One-time, no subscription. Run the report →

FAQ

Do you need a bill of sale to sell a car privately in Utah?

Sometimes.

Does a Utah car bill of sale have to be notarized?

No. Utah does not require a car bill of sale to be notarized for a standard private sale.

Is there an official Utah bill of sale form?

Yes — TC-843, Bill of Sale (Utah State Tax Commission, Division of Motor Vehicles; Rev. 9/25 verified) (linked above). You can also use any document that contains the same information.

What should a Utah car bill of sale include?

At minimum: vehicle year, make, model, body type; vehicle/hull identification number (vin/hin); license plate number and whether the plate is included in the sale; seller name and address; sale price; date of sale.

What should I check before signing the Utah bill of sale?

Confirm the VIN on the document matches the dashboard and door-jamb VIN character-for-character, and check the vehicle's history first: the $9.99 CarWhere Full VIN Report shows open recalls for that VIN, plus complaints and service bulletins for the model and the original window sticker where available. Once you sign, the car — and its problems — are yours, so they're cheaper to find before you sign.
