Volkswagen Atlas problems and known issues

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The most widespread documented Volkswagen Atlas problems are air bag recalls: a passenger seat sensor wiring fault that can switch off the front passenger air bag (23V215, 24V464) and corroding door wiring that can delay the front side air bags (22V152). Other Atlas recalls cover steering knuckles, engine connecting rod bearings, A/C drain leaks and rear camera software.

CarWhere lists 31 documented Atlas issues, including 31 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source. Recall entries come from NHTSA's recall dataset on the DOT open-data portal, which may not list every campaign, so run the specific VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup.

This page explains specific mechanical issues and recalls. Which model years drew the most owner complaints relative to the rest of the model’s history is answered in the years-to-avoid research where CarWhere publishes it.

Confirm how an Atlas was built before you buy.

Engine, transmission and packages decide which of these issues apply. The CarWhere Volkswagen build sheet reconstructs factory colors, options and packages from licensed VIN-level build data — availability is checked free, and it is $9.99 only when detailed build data is found for that VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What are the biggest Volkswagen Atlas recalls?

By vehicles covered, the largest are 24V464 (271,330 units, 2021–2024 Atlas and 2020–2024 Atlas Cross Sport) and 23V215 (143,053 units, 2018–2021 Atlas and 2020 Cross Sport) for passenger seat sensor wiring, 22V152 (222,892 units) for door wiring that can delay the side air bags, and 26V590 (208,724 units across models) for a steering rack bolt on 2018–2019 Atlas models.

Why does my Atlas show passenger air bag OFF with an adult in the seat?

That is the fault described in recalls 23V215 and 24V464. A wiring problem in the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) can switch the front passenger air bag off when the seat is occupied. Dealers replace the PODS sensor mat and wiring harness for free. A 2021 Atlas can be covered by both campaigns.

Has the Atlas had engine recalls?

Yes. Recall 22V753 covers connecting rod bearings that can fail on some 2022–2023 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models (76,515 units including related Audi Q5s), and 23V593 covers the same issue on 2,018 2024 models. Dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed. Recall 25V100 removes engine covers that can melt on 2024–2025 models.

Which Atlas years have steering recalls?

Recalls 20V712 and 21V026 cover front steering knuckles that may be damaged or crack on 2021 Atlas and 2020–2021 Atlas Cross Sport models. Recall 26V590, filed in September 2026, covers a steering rack mounting bolt that can corrode and break on 2018–2019 Atlas models; dealers replace the right-side bolt.

Does the 2027 Atlas have any recalls?

As of November 2026, the NHTSA recall dataset lists no campaigns naming the 2027 Atlas, the all-new generation. The 2024–2026 refreshed Atlas has recalls for engine bearings (2024), the brake master cylinder (2024), engine covers and several rearview camera software faults.

How do I check a used Atlas for open recalls?

Enter the 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and ask a Volkswagen dealer for repair orders showing completed recall work. On 2018–2023 models, confirm the PODS and door wiring (22V152) repairs specifically, since those cover the most vehicles and both affect air bags.
