Volvo XC90 engines, horsepower and mpg

EPA rates the 2026 XC90 T8 at 58 MPGe combined on electricity with 33 miles of electric range, and 27 mpg combined on gasoline alone. For 2027 EPA rates the B5 at 23/29/25 mpg. Volvo does not publish B5 and B6 output in the press releases we could retrieve, so those figures are left blank. A long-range XC90 T8 with up to 73 miles of electric range (Volvo preliminary figure) enters production in fall 2026 for deliveries in early 2027.

XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid explained

The T8 pairs a 2.0-liter gasoline engine driving the front wheels with an electric motor on the rear axle. When the XC90 T8 launched for 2016, Volvo quoted 394 hp and EPA rated it at 53 MPGe with 14 miles of electric range; Volvo listed it at 400 hp from the 2017 model year.

In March 2022 Volvo announced an extended-range update: battery energy rose from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh and the rear motor from 87 hp to 143 hp, for 455 hp and 523 lb-ft combined. EPA rates the 2026 XC90 T8 at 58 MPGe and 33 miles of electric range.

Volvo calls the next version, built from fall 2026, a long-range plug-in hybrid with up to 73 miles of electric range for the XC90, a preliminary figure based on EPA test standards.

  • 2016: 394 hp (Volvo), 53 MPGe / 14 mi (EPA)
  • 2017: 400 hp (Volvo)
  • 2022 extended range: 18.8 kWh, 455 hp / 523 lb-ft
  • 2026: 58 MPGe / 33 mi electric range (EPA)
  • 2027 long-range: up to 73 mi (Volvo, preliminary)

B5 vs B6: the two mild-hybrid XC90s

Both are 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an 8-speed automatic; Volvo says its mild hybrids cut fuel use by up to 15 percent in real-world driving. EPA lists the B5 as turbocharged and the B6 as turbocharged and supercharged.

On the 2025.5 price list a B6 Core cost $4,900 more than a B5 Core ($63,350 vs $58,450, excluding destination). EPA rates the 2026 B5 at 24 mpg combined and the B6 at 23 mpg.

  • B5: turbo, 22/27/24 mpg (2026 EPA)
  • B6: turbo + supercharger, 20/26/23 mpg (2026 EPA)
  • Mild hybrids never need to be plugged in

Volvo T5 and T6 engine names in the XC90

In the first-generation XC90, "T6" meant a 2.9-liter twin-turbo inline six with 268 hp and 280 lb-ft. In the second generation, the T6 became a 2.0-liter four-cylinder Drive-E engine with both a supercharger and a turbocharger, making 316 hp and 295 lb-ft through an 8-speed automatic.

From the 2023 lineup Volvo replaced the T5 and T6 badges with mild-hybrid B5 and B6 versions, keeping T8 for the plug-in hybrid.[13][8][11]

Momentum, R-Design and Inscription became Core, Plus and Ultra

The 2016 XC90 launched with three trim lines: Momentum, Inscription and R-Design. For 2023 Volvo dropped those trim lines; the 2024 price list uses Core, Plus and Ultimate with Bright or Dark themes, and the 2025 list renames Ultimate to Ultra. Volvo also dropped the "Recharge" name from its plug-in hybrids for 2025, so the XC90 Recharge became simply the XC90 T8.[9][11][21][2]
