Audi A8 history: from the 1988 Audi V8 to the D5 A8 and S8

By CarWhere Research · Updated

The Audi A8 is Audi's flagship sedan. It replaced the Audi V8, Audi's first big luxury car (1988), in March 1994, with an all-aluminum Audi Space Frame body. Four generations followed: D2 (1994), D3 (2002), D4 (2009) and D5 (2017). The US got the A8 from 1997, and the D5 A8 L and S8 remain on sale for 2026.

Audi A8 (and Audi V8) history

Audi's move into the luxury class started with the Audi V8 in 1988, its first large luxury model, powered by a 3.6-liter, four-valve V8. It was the first Audi with a V8 and the first to pair quattro with an automatic transmission. A racing version won the German Touring Car Championship in 1990 and 1991. US buyers got the V8 quattro from 1990, with a 4.2-liter engine later.

Its successor began with an aluminum design study shown at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show. The production car debuted at the Geneva show in March 1994 as the A8, the first car under Audi's new model names. Its Audi Space Frame (ASF) is a high-strength aluminum frame in which the body panels also carry load. Audi says the A8 was the first North American car with an aluminum space-frame body. US sales began for 1997.

Later generations added the W12 (D3), LED lighting firsts, a 48-volt mild-hybrid V6 and a laser scanner (D5). Every generation has offered a high-performance S8, built at Neckarsulm. For 2026 the A8 L and S8 continue in the US with new Executive plus packages.[1],[3],[5],[7],[8],[9],[10],[11],[12],[13],[14]

Engine and drivetrain facts

  • The 1988 Audi V8 used a 3.6-liter V8 with four valves per cylinder, Audi's first V8 engine. Its quattro system was paired with an automatic transmission for the first time.
  • Audi says the A8 was the first North American car with an aluminum body built on the space-frame principle, a high-strength aluminum frame whose panels also bear load.
  • The 2013 A8 brought the first V6 gasoline and TDI engines to the US A8 line: the 3.0 TFSI made 333 hp and reached 60 mph in 5.5 seconds.
  • The D5 A8 launched in the US with a 3.0-liter turbo V6 and a standard 48-volt mild-hybrid system (10 Ah lithium-ion battery and belt alternator-starter). It was also the first production car with a laser scanner for driver assistance.
  • The D5 S8 pairs its 563 hp twin-turbo V8 with standard dynamic all-wheel steering, a quattro sport differential and predictive active suspension; Audi quotes 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

What to check before you buy one

  • Aluminum bodywork needs aluminum-qualified repair. Ask for any accident history and check that body repairs were done by a shop equipped for Audi Space Frame structures.
  • Air suspension, predictive active suspension and the 48-volt system are expensive to fix. Check that the car sits level after standing overnight, and that there are no suspension or electrical warnings.
  • Confirm the engine and package from the VIN. A8s of the same year range from V6 to W12 or V8, and the Executive, Luxury and Executive plus packages add costly equipment.
  • For a 2014–2016 A8 TDI, check its emissions-modification status and related paperwork by VIN.
  • Get a pre-purchase inspection from a technician who works on Audi flagships, and check open recalls by VIN.

How to verify a Audi A8 (and Audi V8)'s factory options

A8s carry some of Audi's most expensive factory options: engines, rear-seat and assistance packages, suspension and lighting. CarWhere checks the 17-character VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the car was built with. It does not promise a complete option list for every VIN.

Audi build sheet by VIN

CarWhere checks a specific VIN for licensed factory build data and, when it exists, lists the equipment the vehicle was built with — trim, drivetrain, paint, interior and option packages — in plain English. Coverage varies by VIN and model year and is strongest for recent vehicles.
