Frequently asked questions

What is the rarest car color?

By share of new cars for sale in the US, purple is the rarest base color at 0.03% of color-classified listings, followed by pink, yellow and orange. Among individual paints, special-order colors built for a handful of cars are rarer, but manufacturers rarely publish per-color production counts.

What are the most common car colors?

White, black, grey and silver account for 82.0% of the 2,213,921 new cars in CarWhere's live US listing data. White alone is 31.7%.

Are rare colors harder to find on the used market?

Yes, by definition: if a color is a fraction of a percent of new cars, it is a similar fraction of used inventory a few years later. On performance and exotic models, bright colors are far more common than on mainstream cars, so they are easier to find there.

How do I confirm a used car was originally a rare factory color?

Check the car's build sheet by VIN. On the brand build sheets CarWhere offers, the availability check is free; if build data exists for that VIN, the $9.99 report shows the factory exterior color and interior trim recorded for the car.
