Used Wrangler: generations and model years
Used Wranglers for sale span 3 generations in CarWhere's data, with the JL (2018–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.
JL (2018–present) · 2018–presentCurrent
The JL Wrangler launched for 2018 and got a mid-cycle refresh for 2024. For 2026 Jeep lists seven trims and three engines: the 285-hp 3.6L V6 (six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic), the 270-hp 2.0L turbo four and the 470-hp 6.4L V8 in the new Moab 392. The 4xe plug-in hybrid is gone after 2025. The 2027 Wrangler starts at $36,635 before destination, and Jeep's monthly Twelve 4 Twelve run adds special editions such as Sarge, Laredo, JL-2A and Switchback.
JL 4xe plug-in hybrid (2021–2025) · 2021–2025
The Wrangler 4xe paired the 2.0L turbo four with two electric motors and a battery pack; Stellantis quoted 21 miles of electric range and 49 MPGe for 2025. It was four-door only and was dropped from Jeep's lineup for 2026 when Stellantis ended its North American plug-in hybrids. The 2024–2025 Rubicon 392 (Final Edition) was the last pre-Moab V8 Wrangler.
JK (2007–2018) · 2007–2018
The JK introduced the four-door Wrangler Unlimited. Early models used a 3.8L V6; the 3.6L Pentastar V6 replaced it for 2012. Core trims were Sport, Sahara and Rubicon in two- and four-door form, plus many special editions. A JK was sold alongside the new JL for 2018.
Years to avoid, best years and known issues
Before you shortlist a used Wrangler, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.
What to check before buying a used Wrangler
- Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
- Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
- Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
- Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
- Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
- Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a Wrangler?
On a new Wrangler, verified CarWhere buyers paid a median 7% below MSRP — about $3,400 — across 6 deals (Dec 2025–May 2026). The middle half paid between 5.8% and 8.7% off. Use that as your benchmark: a discount off MSRP measured before rebates, with no dealer add-ons. A used Wrangler's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.
When is the best time to buy a Wrangler?
CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. That's narrower than the spread between Wrangler buyers themselves: the middle half paid between 5.8% and 8.7% off MSRP. Negotiation matters more than the calendar.
Should I buy a new or used Wrangler?
New gets you the current JL Wrangler (2018–present) with a full factory warranty, from $36,390 MSRP. Verified buyers paid a median 7% off. Used, the main alternative is the JL 4xe plug-in hybrid (2021–2025), and 1 older generation goes back to 2007–2018. Before you buy a used one, check the years to avoid and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
