The best-known Wrangler problem is “death wobble,” a violent front-end shake on solid-axle Jeeps; FCA replaced steering dampers on 2018–2019 JL models under service campaign V41. Other documented issues include the 18V-675 track bar weld recall, manual-clutch overheating recalls on 2018–2023 models and a 4xe battery fire recall covering 2020–2025.
CarWhere lists 9 documented Wrangler issues, including 7 NHTSA safety recalls, each with affected years, powertrains, symptoms, pre-purchase checks and a source.
JL Wrangler problems (2018–present)
“Death wobble” front-end oscillation (steering damper campaign V41) (2007–2019)
Major repair- Generation:
- JL (2018–2019); also reported on JK (2007–2018)
- Years:
- 2007–2019
- Powertrain:
- All engines
“Death wobble” is a violent, self-sustaining side-to-side shake of the front axle and steering wheel, usually set off by a bump at roughly 40–60 mph and only stopped by slowing right down. It is a resonance problem common to solid front axles: worn or loose track bar, ball joints, tie rods or a weak steering damper let it start. In June 2019 FCA released Customer Satisfaction Notification V41, a redesigned steering damper for 2018–2019 JL Wranglers after air in the damper’s base valve was found to reduce damping. FCA called it a customer satisfaction action, not a safety recall, and said steering vibration can occur on any solid-axle vehicle. NHTSA folded wobble complaints into investigation PE19-012 and closed it in October 2023 without a recall, noting the damper and other steering fixes.
Symptoms
- Violent steering-wheel and front-end shake after a bump or expansion joint
- Shake that persists until the vehicle is slowed sharply
- Clunking from the front axle, loose or vague steering on centre
Check before buying
- Ask whether CSN V41 (new steering damper) was done on a 2018–2019 JL
- With the engine running, have someone rock the steering wheel while you watch the track bar ends, tie-rod ends and ball joints for play
- Check for oversized tires or a lift kit without matching geometry corrections
- Test-drive over expansion joints at 45–60 mph

Front track bar bracket weld recall (2018–2019)
Safety recall- Generation:
- JL (2018–2019)
- Years:
- 2018–2019
- Powertrain:
- All engines
Some 2018–2019 Wrangler JL frames had front track bar brackets that were improperly welded because of a welding-tool misalignment. A bracket that separates from the frame reduces steering control. Dealers inspect and repair the welds. NHTSA’s later frame-weld investigation (PE19-012, 355,088 vehicles) found this recall correctly covered the vehicles at risk and closed in 2023.
Symptoms
- Wandering or delayed steering response
- Clunk from the driver-side front frame area
- Visible crack or gap at the track bar bracket weld
Check before buying
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete
- Inspect the frame-side track bar bracket welds for cracks or separation
- Ask for the dealer repair order

Loose steering box and cold-weather power-steering stiction (2018–2019)
Moderate- Generation:
- JL (2018–2019)
- Years:
- 2018–2019
- Powertrain:
- All engines
Alongside the damper campaign, NHTSA’s PE19-012 closing report lists two other JL steering concerns FCA addressed: steering looseness traced to an internal steering-box material sensitive to temperature (fixed with an updated part under TSB 08-003-21 Rev. A) and highway-speed loss of power assist in cold weather caused by an underpowered steering pump calibration (software update under CSN Y95, December 2021).
Symptoms
- Play or dead spot in the steering on centre
- Constant small corrections needed on the highway
- Steering briefly going heavy at highway speed in cold weather
Check before buying
- Ask whether the steering gear was replaced under TSB 08-003-21
- Ask whether CSN Y95 software was applied
- Check steering free play with the wheels on the ground

Manual-transmission clutch pressure plate overheating recall (2018–2023)
Safety recall- Generation:
- JL (2018–2023), 6-speed manual
- Years:
- 2018–2023
FCA recalled manual-transmission Wranglers three times because the clutch pressure plate can overheat and fracture, risking fire, debris on the road or loss of drive. Recall 20V-124 rerouted a harness, 21V-028 added software to cut torque when clutch temperatures rise, and 23V-116 (2018–2023 Wrangler and 2020–2023 Gladiator) replaces the clutch assembly and updates software.
Symptoms
- Clutch overheat warning on the dash
- Burning smell after slow off-road or stop-and-go driving
- Clutch slipping or judder
Check before buying
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete for 23V116 (and the earlier 20V124/21V028)
- Ask for proof the clutch assembly was replaced
- Test clutch engagement on a hill start

Wrangler 4xe high-voltage battery fire recall (2021–2025)
Safety recall- Generation:
- JL (2021–2025) 4xe plug-in hybrid
- Years:
- 2021–2025
Recall 25V-741 covers 2020–2025 Wrangler 4xe models (and 2022–2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe) because the high-voltage battery can fail internally and catch fire while parked or driving. It replaces the earlier 24V-720 remedy, and an older 23V-787 campaign covered 2021–2023 models. Until repaired, owners are told not to charge the vehicle and to park outside. Dealers update battery software and replace the pack as needed.
Symptoms
- Usually none before failure
- Hybrid system or battery warning messages
Check before buying
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and confirm the remedy shows as complete; vehicles repaired under 24V720 still need the 25V741 remedy
- Ask whether the high-voltage battery pack was replaced
- Confirm there are no open hybrid-system warnings
