Engines, equipment and previous-generation trims: Rogue trim levels explained
Used Rogue: generations and model years
Used Rogues for sale span 5 generations in CarWhere's data, with the Rogue (third generation), 2027 model year (2021–present) on sale new. Knowing which generation a listing belongs to tells you which engines, recalls and known issues apply.
Rogue (third generation), 2027 model year · 2021–presentCurrent
Nissan redesigned the Rogue for 2021 and switched it to a 1.5L VC-Turbo three-cylinder for 2022. For 2027 the gas Rogue keeps five grades with standard FWD or Intelligent AWD (AWD only on Rock Creek and Platinum) and gets retuned CVT behavior. The SL grade was dropped with the 2026.5 mid-cycle change.
Rogue Hybrid (e-POWER), 2027 model year · 2027–presentCurrent
The all-new 2027 Rogue Hybrid is sold alongside the gas Rogue. It uses e-POWER, where a 1.5L gas engine only generates electricity and two electric motors drive all four wheels. The SR with SR Technology Package launched in fall 2026; SV, SR and Platinum follow in early 2027.
Rogue Plug-in Hybrid, 2026 model year · 2026–presentCurrent
Nissan's first US plug-in hybrid arrived in February 2026 in two AWD grades. Nissan rates it for about 38 miles of electric driving, up to 420 miles of total range and 64 MPGe.
Rogue, 2025 model year (before the 2026.5 change) · 2021–present
For 2025 Nissan added the Rock Creek grade and offered ProPILOT Assist 2.1 hands-off freeway driving on SL and Platinum. This was the last lineup with the SL grade.
Rogue, 2022 model year (VC-Turbo launch) · 2021–present
The 2022 Rogue replaced the 2021 engine with the 1.5L VC-Turbo, which Nissan says added 11% more horsepower and 24% more torque. Four grades were offered, each with FWD or AWD.
Years to avoid, best years and known issues
Before you shortlist a used Rogue, check its model year against CarWhere's reliability research and the known issues for its generation.
What to check before buying a used Rogue
- Run the VIN for title brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon buyback), odometer history and reported accidents before you go see it.
- Check the VIN for open safety recalls and confirm the dealer will complete any open campaign before delivery.
- Decode the VIN or pull the build sheet to confirm the engine, drivetrain, trim and options match the listing.
- Test four-wheel or all-wheel drive, and on off-road trims look under the vehicle for skid-plate damage and bent suspension parts.
- Check every row: folding seats, rear climate, power liftgate and all door seals for water leaks.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection — especially for suspension, brakes, tires and any fluid leaks.
- Ask for service records, and confirm how much factory warranty is left from the original in-service date.
- Negotiate the vehicle price first, then fees; refuse dealer add-ons you did not ask for.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I pay for a Rogue?
Start from the starting MSRP of the trim you want — 2027 Rogue pricing begins at $29,690 — and negotiate the selling price as a discount off MSRP, before rebates and with no dealer add-ons. CarWhere doesn't have enough verified Rogue deals yet to publish a median discount. A used Rogue's price depends on year, mileage and condition, so compare several listings near you before you make an offer.
When is the best time to buy a Rogue?
CarWhere's best-time research finds that new-car discounts have historically been largest from October through December, and January is strongest for used cars. But the seasonal edge is small: average discounts in CarWhere's verified deals move by only a point or two between periods. Negotiating the price matters more than the calendar.
Should I buy a new or used Rogue?
New gets you the current Rogue (third generation), 2027 model year Rogue (2021–present) with a full factory warranty, from $29,690 MSRP. Used, the main alternative is the Rogue, 2025 model year (2021–present), and 1 older generation goes back to 2021–present. Before you buy a used one, check the years to avoid and known issues by generation, and run the VIN for title and accident history.
